Breaking News

Breaking News:  The suspected serial killer, Mark Dizon, has been captured/arrested at La Union Plaza, San Fernando, on Tuesday, 27 Jul.  He was transported to the City Jail, Angeles City at 10 PM, same day and a press conference was held by Mayor Pamintuan, City Director Baudtista and PNP General Cacdac.  Further information will be covered in my Aug column.  The important thing is to know that this dirt bag is now behind bars and off the streets.

23 Jul - 10 PM - Received this text from the Mayor - "Angeles like any city not spared from similar incidents in other places, towns and cities in the country.  But, we are not making excuses, PNP doing its best to get the nut ASAP".  I appreciated that the Mayor took the time to respond to my text questions and just as I was typing this I received a later in the night text (2430 hrs) from the Mayor stating "Harry, killer of 3 murder cases of three Caucasians and collateral filipinos killed identified...name is Mark Dizon and a computer repairman..PNP have picture, went to his house, got his clothes. Anytime now he will be arrested.  Family of killer negotiating surrender for their son."  On Sunday, 24 Jul, I was notified that the police missed grabbing Mark by minutes as he was able to get away from his house on a motor bike.  The police remain on 24 hour alert and have gone to wearing bullet proof vests as they for prepare for immediate action upon any sighting of Mark.  Receipt of another text from the Mayor indicated that turned over to him were electronic items like computers, cameras and other like items pawned by Mark Dizon.  I was able, on Sunday, turn over to the police various pictures of Mark that were sent to me by a source.  They are very revealing photos in which the police showed a keen interest.  Some of those photos follow:

I am writing this at 4 PM, 22 Jul.  Notification reached me a few minutes ago that another killing of an expat took place this day or last night.  This was not just a killing, but a massacre!  Angeles City police director Supt. Danilo Bautista identified the victims as Albert Mitchell (Past VFW Commander), a retired US Air Force personnel, his Filipina wife Jeanette Androneda, househelpers Isabel Fajardo and Marissa Prado, and a certain Boy Vergara of Dau in Mabalacat town in Pampanga. The incident occurred at Mitchell's house in Hensonville Court Subdivision in Malabanias village, at around 1:30 pm, Bautista said. Initial investigation showed that a man entered the subdivision at around 12 noon and went out carrying several items. Security guard Angelito Prado, brother of one of the victims, Marissa, discovered the bodies, who bore gunshot wounds from a 9-mm pistol. Prado told police he had asked a fellow guard not to allow the man to leave the subdivision while he checked on Mitchell's house, just about 50 meters away from the guardhouse, as he suspected something was wrong. Prado rushed back to the guardhouse after discovering the crime, but the suspect was already on board a tricycle. The suspect got off at the nearby Marisol village, according to the tricycle driver, but police authorities were unable to track him down.  By the time this goes to print I should have more details and who knows, maybe the killer will be apprehended. I have heard that they know who the suspect is and have a picture of him.  For sure, the Expat community is very concerned about these killings that have taken place within a 12 day period. In the 29 years I have lived in this City I have never seen such a rash killing of Expats.  Hopefully, Chief of Police Bautista will be exerting extreme efforts to apprehend this villain or villains. On 23 Jul the Mayor informed me that he just had a command conference with the PNP and the CIDG.  This Mayor is actively involved in getting some aggressive actions from Law Enforcement agencies to solve these crimes.

Subject: 2 MURDERED-OASIS HOTEL, ANGELES CITY - CANADIAN & LOVER FOUND DEAD

Angeles City---Police are looking into the death of a 60-year old Canadian and his live-in partner whose decomposing bodies were found inside a villa at the Oasis Hotel in Angeles City, on Monday, 12July 2010. Police Regional Office 3 Director, Chief Supt. Arturo G. Cacdac, Jr. identified the fatalities as Geofrey Allan Bennun and his alleged lover, Abegail Legsarda Helina, 20. They bore gunshot wounds.(I have been told that both victims were shot in the back of the head) Cacdac ordered Angeles City police chief, Senior Supt. Danilo Bautista to dig deeper into the case and identify the assailants of the victims. "The twin killings should be solved at once since it is a high profile case involving a foreigner staying in the country," he said. Chief Inspector Luisito Tan, said empty shells of 9mm caliber pistol were recovered near the body of Bennun. Police said security guards of the hotel informed authorities of an unusual odor emanating from the couple's room. A team of police officers led by Senior Inspector Robledo Zinampan, proceeded to the hotel and discovered the decomposing bodies of the victims. The bodies were brought to the Funeraria Angelina funeral parlor for autopsy. Investigators initially theorized robbery as the motive for the slaying since the Canadian's computer laptop, cell phones, digital cameras and other valuables were missing. But Bautista said they are also looking into a love triangle situation. He said they will invite Helina's former boyfriend, also a foreigner, for questioning. The Angeles police formed a special investigation group headed by police Supt. Elvis Diaz to solve the crime. (source of info is from a news article written by Rudy Abular and Bernard Galang, on page 13 of the 15 July 2010 edition of The People's Journal newspaper) (What makes one think that the killer was known to the victims is that there was no sign of forced entry to the residence.  The reason for the foul odor is that the bodies were not discovered until two or three days after the incident took place.  In this heat, it does not take long for decomposition to start taking place. It will be interesting to see if this case is ever solved as normally, aggressive investigation into the murder of a foreigner never takes place unless someone is around who will provide the necessary funds to do so.  Guess what, a few days after I wrote this I was informed that Trevor David Bennun, brother of Geofrey arrived in the Philippines to look after the details of the estate.  Would you believe he asked some close friends of Geofrey for some advice.  It seems that he was getting the run-a-round from the police.  They informed him that they had low salaries and were also hungry and needed some money to eat as well as money for gas and to conduct the investigation.  I do not know where these police were assigned but it is typical of police here to do this.  At a meeting with the Mayor I was able to pass this information along and he called the Chief of police who only responded that a "task force" to investigate this murder and the second one had been formed.)

Jul 16th - Another foreigner and his girlfriend have been found murdered inside their house in Sta. Maria Subdivision earlier today after a foul decaying smell prompted police to check the house. It appears that the Caucasian foreigner of yet unknown identity was stabbed whilst his girlfriend might have been choked to death a few days ago. This has happened only days after the murder of the Canadian and his girlfriend in the Oasis Hotel villa.  Whether it is the same killer or merely coincidence is still unclear.
Update: The foreigner involved was of British nationality and shot with a 9mm caliber pistol in the face whilst a bullet wound was found in the girlfriends lower body.  The caliber used was the same as that of the Canadian case and both presumably used a silencer.  Neighbors, however, had heard some shouting between a male Filipino and the slain girlfriend on a date which would have been just before the presumed day of the murder.  This, prompting the speculation that the girlfriend might have had an argument with a Filipino boyfriend in the house beforehand. The victims were identified as one James Bolton Porter, 51 years of age, British, and Melissa Madarang y Castaneda, 22 years of age and the live in partner of James. (These two murders have the Expat community concerned.  They were within days of each other and are so similar in nature.  I doubt that they were connected but it is one hell of a coincidence.  It seems that more and more guns are being used in criminal activities here.  These are two high profile cases and maybe aggressive investigations will take place without fringe cops asking for money to do their job.  I believe Mayor Ed will keep the pressure on his Police Chief to come up with some results.  I was informed that Geofrey, the first victim was had already started the process to obtain a retirement visa.  He was born in South Africa, educated in England and had a Canadian passport.  Quite often, when something like this happens to older Expats with young live-in ladies there is a jealous Filipino boyfriend involved and I wonder if this could be the case with both of these murders.  Hopefully, before the end of this month I can update with some positive news)

When I took this picture I did not notice how long that finger is. Man, that could certainly get my attention if she placed it in a delicate location one night. She looks like she is ready to suck some, eh, blood, of course, but believe me it is all an act. You can find this wild cat at the Golden Nile and I will be writing a little bit more later in the column. Personally, I think she is a Republican that just had a date with a cheap charley Democrat. My goodness, six months of this year has passed on by already and June was a pretty good month. It started off with a bit of rain but that has slowed down and the heat is still with us. This month will see the new Mayor, Ed Pamintuan, taking over City Hall and many folks are anticipating better days ahead. Lets hope so. I am happy to report that there is construction activity at the Lexus Hotel. Following is a statement from the new owner:

Here's a news flash for you - NO MORE LEXUS - The infamous Lexus building, previously under very slow construction opposite the International (previously Shannos) on A. Santos Street has been renamed "the Penthouse" and has come to life under the new ownership and personal management of well known Angeles business identity Louis Yatich, founder and owner of the prosperous "Lewis Grand Hotel". The building has been redesigned to provide freehold title to approximately 90 executive self-contained suites with luxury amenities and appointments. Construction is now at full capacity pouring at least one floor per month.

Previous owners, the Kennedy family of Singapore, struggled with the construction for over three years and claim to have lost over $1 million US on the project. They are allegedly pursuing the original Canadian owners through the courts for damages relating to misrepresentations on the purchase. Meanwhile, the construction activity will be a welcome sight for everyone involved and we look forward to the completion of this Angeles Landmark in maybe 12 months. Watch the new website under construction: www.thepenthouseinvestments.com.

I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Jack Uy, owner of Spenser's Fusion Bar and Resto, on their 6th anniversary celebration last June 18. It was definitely a pleasure for Mrs Horse and I to attend this event as we have been patrons of this restaurant since its opening. I am a fan of their sizzling sisig dish despite the fear of clogging up my arteries. I kept hoping that I would win one of the major raffle prizes but it was not to be. Spenser's is located in the Saver's Mart building on MacArthur Ave and it is a place you would enjoy visiting for some good food along with a bit of shopping.

Oh man, I hate messing with my teeth, especially if root canals are involved. Regretfully, I am now under care of my super dentist Dr. Te at Smile Make Over who is treating me for a big time infection involving the removal of a cyst under my gum, right above a tooth that underwent root canal 20 years ago. This time I had to undergo surgery by cutting my gum to the bone, making a flap or whatever. Regretfully, I will need a new bridge replacing the one I have had since a year before the base closed in 1991. I remember the great work Air Force Dentist Dr. Grace did in putting that bridge in. I was hoping it would last a life time and it probably would have if not for the infection. I am not a happy camper as I hate pain and have a low tolerance for it but I'll tell you this, and this is not bull shit, I would not want this work done anywhere other than with Doc Te at Smile Make Over. Boy, do they have the right equipment, gentle touch, personal care and they even have a small "relaxation room" where one can relax in a lazy boy chair, listen to music and recover from the stress of a very difficult dental procedure. More details next month. I don't know how stressed out I will be in July but am hoping this dental procedure will not slow me down.

THE MAILBAG

Hi Mr Horse, How easy is it to find / approach a "nice" girl in the Phillipines. I like the women over there but don't want to get caught out. Are they approachable and if they like you will they come over to talk to you. I definitely wont be finding a girl from a bar as that is a very very bad idea, but would like to find a nice girl. Thanks, NS. (For entertainment with no serious intent, enjoy the bar girls. For a more serious encounter, trying to meet a "nice" girl is more difficult. You have to be polite, friendly, have a smile, be clean cut and be a good talker. You can chat up a lady in a restaurant, store, dept store, and see how they react then go from there. By the way, you might be surprised to learn that there are some rather nice ladies that work in the bars, you just have to search them out. There are a lot of foreigners happily married to some lady they met in a bar here. Of course there are some that are miserable with the choice they made but hell, I think the percentage of unhappy marriages is higher in the US, England, Australia, etc., then here. I bet you know some folks in your own neighborhood that would love to dump the lady they are now living with and come over here. Believe me, on site researching here in AC is a lot more enjoyable then doing so in other countries. Stop by my stable after you have completed your "search" and let me see how well you did)

Cherry's ClubSent by "Pudd" to Greg - Just finished a round at Mackay course, shot 94 off the stick, 6 pars and 1 birdie on par 4 and had a couple of 8s so they are definitely helping, just have to get the R9 driver set to my swing, as for Cheyenne I went and seen him after golf, OK but very thin and the cold is not helping but no real changes over the last couple of months, but I see him every 7 to 10 days so I might not notice anything though he said things are as good as can be expected. I will let him know you and others have been asking and will let you know if anything happens. (Report From "Pudd" to Greg Carroll on the health of "Cheyenne", a well known Expat who spent many years here in Angeles City and is well liked by many. His health took a downward spin a while back and many folks want to know how he is and hope he will be able to get back to Angeles City some day, or year, or years. Ah shit, get well Cheyenne!)

Hi Harry, Enjoying your June letter and, as usual, it's outstanding. With your permission......I noticed in this issue that you mentioned the AC1 gym again as well as doing an excellent picture story re the Enclave gym in March of this year. Why no comments regarding Fitness Connection (FC) on MacArthur? (to be quite honest, I never noticed the place)

Interestingly, you refer to AC1 as the "best overall gym in town" (June 2010). I believe that if you visit FC you may possibly change your mind. With the exception of no sauna, the equipment is much better as well as newer than that of AC1 gym and, yes, AC1 is an excellent gym. (Eh, come on Dennis, I'm too old to change my mind and with no steam room we old guys with aching bones would be lost)

FC's staff is well trained (not constantly texting and spending all the time talking to girls) and more than happy to assist visitors. Additionally, Paul Wakefield, the owner of FC, is there daily to show proper usage of the equipment. Fyi, he is Mr. Britain 2006. (Noted, I will make sure I never make him mad). Even better, he is actually pleasant to speak with and doesn't gruffly tell members "to go somewhere else" if they don't like something. Hmmmm, wonder who I'm speaking about here. (I wonder too, could you be specific?)

Hopefully you will consider a visit to FC and possibly a mention in your newsletter. Thank you. (I broke my rule of never using the "Best" word so I should have simply said that the AC1 gym is a "great" gym or "excellent" or even "meets all your gym needs at a reasonable cost". I can appreciate your pride in the FC Gym and I will definitely consider a visit. But, I will not get into words about which gym is the "best" but will appreciate the fact that there is another gym in town that I am sure will meet the needs of anyone seeking an outlet for exercise. The location is convenient for those folks on the other side of town and I do try to introduce any business that I think Expats and tourists would be interested in. Look for this old "Horse" to pop into this gym establishment, with camera in hand, in the near future.)

Btw, when running my cursor over the horse emblem at the bottom of your newsletter, I no longer see your email address appear at the bottom left-hand corner of my notebook screen. My PC or have you made a change? Thanx, Dennis (Thanks for the heads up on that, I did not notice it was missing).

Australian Visa Assistance

"Harry," I read your May newsletter (which I really enjoyed reading), and I thought I'd respond to your request regarding the practice of short changing customers at 7-11 (next to Manson Drug). I have had this happen to me, I think twice, in the past few months. As you wrote, they just say sorry sir and then give you the correct change. The guys seem so cool and friendly that maybe no one suspects that they have a racket going on. Anyhow, I'd like to stay anonymous. But, I thought I'd do my part to help. Mr. X

Dear Harry, enjoyed your June issue and i hope you go strength to strength ,GET WELL soon. i hope you have good health as you are so valued by all and every one all over the world. well i want to tell you some thing. you know i have been coming to ac frequently over the years for holiday and through kindness been sending money to help one or two girls there. But some things happened and i realize i have been fooled. i use to communicate with a girl there and she was crying and txting me telling me she lost her father in Samar and needed to borrow 5000p to go to the funeral and would pay me back. i send her the money with out thinking twice and as soon as she got the money i have lost all contact with her. Please don't print my name. thanks. (I bet you will hear from her again when she needs more money. Believe me, this is a common story so do not feel too bad. Long distance communication is great, just do not send any money. So many of these ladies are great con-artists).

Wild Orchid ResortDear Harry, I read your website every month and I find it to be very informative. As a restaurant owner here at the Subic Bay Freeport (Texas Joe's House of Ribs), I can assure you that the law is very clear regarding Seniors benefits in this country. The government has generously supplemented the income of all senior citizens in the Philippines on the backs of businesses in the country. This includes airlines, ground transportation, amusement parks, restaurants, movie theaters and on and on and on. As a restaurateur I am required to give a 20% discount off the gross price of the items consumed by the senior. They may NOT share the meal and they may NOT take out the meal. Others at the table may not participate in the discount. There are stiff penalties in the law for those who abuse the privilege. Additionally, this benefit is for Filipino Citizens only. I have had Americans and other non-Filipinos come to my restaurant and present their senior card and demand a discount. I show them the law that says a foreigner who abuses the law is subject to fines, imprisonment and deportation. I try to explain that a discount of 20% off the gross price is more than 100% of my net profit. Meaning I lose money on every sale I make with that senior discount. I have toyed with the idea of raising all of my prices by 20% and then giving the seniors discount to everyone. If the senior sales become a more significant part of my total sales, I certainly will have to raise my prices for everyone in order to cover it. When I went into this business, I never anticipated the flocks of Grey Panthers (a play on the revolutionary black panthers of the 60's for those non-Americans who read this), being a significant part of the business, but unfortunately it is. And shame on those well to do Foreigners who are such cheapskates that they take a Filipino benefit and use it for themselves. Paul Trombetta, Texas Joe's House of Ribs, Authentic American Smokehouse, Subic Bay Freeport, 047-252-3189 (Well said and written Joe. I can see your point about a 20% discount which would knock the hell off any chance of making a profit on a meal. I have a senior citizen card but since it was issued to me, officially, for whatever reason, I use it mostly for ID purposes. It comes in handy when going into gated places and they ask to hold your ID or for any of the other hundred reasons an ID is asked for here. It is a good conversation piece but I sill wonder why they are being issued to foreigners in the first place. I keep saying I will get off my lazy butt and go to the issuing agency in AC and see what they say but I would hate to turn mine in since I enjoy the ID benefit. Priscilla the Horse loves ribs but I have never found your place at Subic, please tell me the location so I can enjoy lunch there one day and take some pictures)

Walkabout hotel

Harry, this from today's Manila Standrd Newspaper (11 Jun). It was entitled The Challenge of Climate Change in the Opinion Section. The author (Emil Jurado) needs to come to AC and see the Korean police car.

According to estimates, there are now about 620,000 Koreans in the Philippines, many of whom came as tourists—but never left. It is said that the Philippines has become the favorite destination of young Koreans who want to avoid military conscription and instead study English or whatever course they can take. No wonder that in cities like Baguio, Angeles, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo and Davao, and even here in Metro Manila, we see "Korean towns". Would you believe that some street signs are in Korean? Just why Koreans who come as tourists but never leave are not being deported and penalized by Immigration is something that puzzles me. Some Filipinos have been complaining that Korean schools (for the English language), with or without permits, are sprouting all over the place! Koreans are even taking over small businesses like hotels and restaurants, even bars and entertainment houses. Still, no action is being done. I have nothing personal against Koreans, but the Justice Department and Immigration should start asking questions. They are making a mockery of our laws! Koreans are also accused of being abrasive and uncouth so much so that they are banned from places like the Baguio Golf and Country Club. I know for a fact that even documented Koreans working as expatriates love to drink and go to brothels. Sure, we need Korean investments. But, Santa Banana, not at the expense of our laws and dignity! I have been told that immigration is going easy on Koreans violating our laws since the South Korean government could retaliate against undocumented migrant Filipinos there. Orchid Inn ResortThere are about 20,000 of them there. (It is nice to see that someone else is writing about the "Korean" invasion other than myself. Mr. Jurado needs to visit the Friendship area of Angeles City if he wants to see "the Mother of all Korean Towns" in the Philippines. Maybe he can get a ride in the "Kor Pol" police vehicle and he might also want to try to check into one of the hotels that are open to Koreans only. Mr. Jurado wonders why Immigration is not doing their job, or the police or City officials. The answer is quite simple, MONEY Baby. I won't continue any further as I would only be repeating words I have written before. It just pleases me to be able to read something written by a Filipino with balls big enough to write something that should have been written a long time ago).

Hi, Harry, Just thought I'd mention the latest ripoff. Transport from Clark Airport to Angeles a ten minute maximum trip used to be around 320 Pesos, This went up to 500P on my last arrival on the 31st of May. Hell I can get from Bangkok airport to Pattaya a hour and a half trip for only 800 Baht or 1,070 Pesos. I don't know if there is a new transport contactor maybe you can find out. Can you warn your readers to prepare for the shock or arrange an alternative pick up arrangement. Doesn't take long to catch up with the Manilla airport pirates. Russell from Australia. (I know how you feel Russell. Regretfully, CIAC lets them get away with it, no matter how many people complain. It is just like the tricycle drivers in Angeles City, charging foreigners three times more than the authorized fare. They do what they want knowing that no City or Barangay official will do anything about it.)

Hi Harry, Thought I would let you know I am getting settled in Mexico, Ensenada, about 90 miles below San Diego. I have spent time here before, know the area quite well, always planned to end up here so I guess this is it. I plan to be Balikbayan, help the twins run the place in Subic, etc. (Those were the latest words to me from the grand old man, Tom Dryden, who has left the Barrio and Subic for the final phase of his life in Mexico. Thomas has many fans here in the PI and the US and I am sure that many folks will be wanting to knock on his door in Ensenada. I would like to be one of them but not sure that will ever happen. Anyway, I have asked Tom to provide me updates once in a while with pictures and stories so his many fans can keep up to date on his latest adventures.)

Brassknob

Hi Harry, Great report/photo of the con-man on Fields. Yes, that is him! You really follow up on stuff, great! I wish I had your energy and persistence. By the way, the same guy is carrying a very young baby now sometimes, to get cash from people. Here another "case', an older Pinoy, driving around outer Fields, Iglesia and Petron area, on his small bike with tag #: 7119 CR He is an expert pocket thief and con-man! Be very careful and just keep walking when he stops and engages under the usual small talk! He is doing his rounds every day and almost got a friend of mine, a cop, for his wallet and more! Thanks for your great services from all of us! Michael W. (Thanks Mike, any warnings are well taken. This is the first I have heard about this guy on the bike. It seems that the area you are talking about is prime for all sorts of criminal activity so I hope all hotel owners are warning customers to be careful when walking this area in daylight or at night)

The following message was sent to me by the daughter of Wendall "Corkey" Robards who passed away here in AC 5 years ago. I was surprised to hear from his daughter so long after his passing. It is an example of how sometimes a broken marriage taking place here can affect the children of those forced away from their father for one reason or another. Corkey had a new life here but he was not forgotten by a daughter that hung on to memories of moments shared with a father so long ago. Regretfully, she harbors a negative view of Filipinas and is a bit bitter, but I would like to tell her that there are a hell of a lot of Filipinas that might meet her criteria but then again, thank goodness, there are so many that are the opposite. I am sure that Corkey would be quite pleased to know that there remains a daughter, so far away, that still loves him and cherishes the few memories of her time with him. I do not have any pictures of Corkey, but if some of his friends here in AC have any maybe you can Email a few to Wendy at wendalyn.robards@gmail.com.

Hi Harry, Although you may not remember or even know who i am. I am 1 out of 4 of Corkeys' daughters. I read your little 'TAPS' or tidbit on my dad on your blog website. The reason for me writing to you is for "TRUTH" and for knowledge. I've been without a father/dad for the last 22yrs. We had gotten word of my dads passing 5yrs ago and for the first time ever i was able to speak to one of my dads sisters. My mother, I felt was more so heartbroken. I myself could only think, I can never truly know who my dad really is.

What I or we (my sister and I) know is that my dad had cheated on my mother with one of HER bar girls and we had left one early morning on MY birthday July of 88. Details of that day...i still remember its something a child can never forget. Some may say he had moved onward to a new life, yes true he moved on and with his moving on he left behind 4 children. He left my mother but at the same time he left his NATURAL daughters with unanswered questions that can never be answered. Our questions aren't about why he left but of FAMILY and WHO WE ARE.

On with your tidbit, you only mention he is survived by his daughter May and his son Christian, last i remembered I have NO brothers and NO OTHER sisters and my father had had a VAS (Vasectomy). I must laugh because I remember receiving a gift several months after my birthday from my dad-it was a yellow box of underwear with a Tri-Fold Card with a $1. As the curious child that I am/was I opened that card up and out fell a letter written by that lady, its funny although i was a lot younger I was able to understand and read that letter, it got to the point I had to hand the letter to my mother. Contents of that letter basically saying "You know how Corkey is, he doesn't like writing that is why i'm writing" and she continues, I believe, with apologies. Then comes months & years finding out she had been forging my mother's signatures for our life insurance, forgery with divorce papers. A lot of forgeries were going on and has left myself along with my BIOLOGICAL siblings and mother with NOTHING. You may ask how do i know all this...same reason I'm good at investigating and reading legal papers, i guess for now that's why I'm in the Criminal Justice and Medical Field.

I'm sure you would understand the feeling that most would feel if you truly knew the situation first hand and was experiencing it. Just the same with your January 2010 blog about Ms. Filipina had gone and murdered her husband for the GREED of Money. Considering my mother was STRIPPED of her benefits we were not able to investigate the truth of my father's death, was it really cardiac arrest??

Swagman Resort I'm not writing asking for pity or out of anger just know this is what children see. Please do not get me wrong, I DO LOVE my dad with all my heart and always have even though there were differences between my mother and him. I have not thought bad of him despite his actions. The memories that I have of my dad are nothing but good and love. I have no doubt my father loved each of my sisters and myself but I would like to know more about him. I have no pictures of him, all I have are memories, his dirty blonde hair & blue/green eyes, what he looked like in his uniform, going out watching him play soft/baseball. Funny, I remember when he got hit with the ball and he was limping and we all ended the day with both teams going to one of the bars and getting a cold washcloth out of the freezer, just memories. I would like, at a point, like to be able to show MY children, HIS Grandchildren, an actual picture of my FATHER and them now realizing "wow that's why my mom's eyes are light brown and that's why my aunt has hazel eyes" for now my children know I AM a Filipina.

I would really greatly appreciate any information regarding my father, it will and would help me to better help my children in their future about who they are and won't have that missing void of their grandfather and i myself will have filled this missing void of who my father is. I will always be proud of being a Robards and having Wendell "Corkey" Robards as my father. -Wendy.

Follow-up reply to my reply to Wendy:

Campbell's Beach ResortThanks for replying back. Yes i knew my father as the same, a drinker, but as a kid you never think of it as that. Your article tidbit of my father was done February '05. He passed January 4 '05. I'd just say overall Filipina's in the Philippines are evil people, period, making money and trying to become US citizen and come to the US and live it up. I see it here with all the FOBs forgetting where they come from. Father's Day is not remember of him as a Father by mother is celebrated on both Mother's & Father's Day for everything she has done.

I wonder if I should classify this as a "public service" announcement or what. I don't know if this means that lots of people will leave town to avoid meeting Ken or whether his friends will provide a motorcade for him. Whatever, heeeeeers Ken: Hi All, I'm presently at my house in Cebu and planning a trip to Angeles and La Union third week of July. Purpose of this e-mail is to alert my old friends as I'd like to catch up with as many as I can, especially in La Union. Below are the dates I'm planning to be around. Yesterday I heard about this during our BBQ and thought it was just a bunch of BS. I am not paranoid about the government like many but this is scary. Go in and do a search on Google for Rex84. Was not aware that something like this even or ever existed. And it has been extended by the current administration. Jimmy Walden. (I did the Google search and what I found was very interesting, and yes, a bit scary. What really concerned me is I did a Snopes.com search and nothing came up)

TIDBITS

For those of you that might be tracking the where-a-bouts of Mark Anthony Lord be advised that he is now the General Manager of the Phuket Palace Resort, Patong Beach, Phuket, Thailand (www.phuketpalaceresort.com and website www.phuketpalaceresort.com).

If you happen to pass by the Grandview Towers on Perimeter Road you will notice that there is active work on the place, at least on one side of the building, as a bunch of workers are working day and night to put finishing touches on some of the units. In fact, the Sun Star newspaper had an article covering the opening of their model apartments. The only problem is that since that so called special day, I cannot find any entrance to those units so I wonder if this was only a window dressing gimmick to lure more investors or to lull those folks who have filed cases against the owners of the building. In any case the legal action initiated by the owner of the Swiss Apartments, Daniel, is ongoing despite setbacks. On 17 Mar the injunction against the Grandview Towers was dissolved in Judge Pinto's Court which led to a request for reconsideration but that was denied. Naturally, there are some questions about the propriety of the court's decision. This is why, now, Daniel, through his lawyer is elevating the case to the Court of Appeals and if necessary, even the Supreme Court.

The question that has always entered my mind is why? Why would one Expat fight so hard over an encroachment violation that, technically, should have been pushed by the City Engineer and construction permits denied by the City. But the City did nothing, the City Engineers, what did they do? That is a good question, maybe they thought it was beneficial to them to turn a blind eye to the situation. Whatever, it still begs the question of why fight the issue so hard and spend so much money doing so? After talking to Daniel, it boils down to pride and the fact that from the beginning, the Grandview Tower folks were arrogant and rude to him and felt that as a foreigner, he was insignificant. I did ask if there was still a way to settle this situation without continuing the legal process but the indication was that, at this time, it was not part of the equation. Daniel asked me, "would I not do the same if I was in his shoes" and I had to honestly say, "no". Not because I disagree with him but I am sorry to say that I would not have had the strength or the money to pursue such a case. So the "David and Goliath" battle continues and I cannot predict a winner. I hope that both sides win and the building is completed, operational, and that the SMART Cell phone folks will move their tower to the roof of the Grandview so that so many of us in the neighborhood can get our cell phone signal back. The "line of sight" was taken away when the building became higher than the tower.

Do you experience those moments when you need some quality plumbing services? There is a company that specializes in declogging services and I'll tell you this, if I had known about Clog Worx I would have given them a call when I encountered a problem or two last year. They have machines that are capable of declogging sewer lines up to 250ft. You can contact them at 09228531995, ask for Bong Granda.

ANGELES CITY, Philippines A brother of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. and two other men were found dead inside an abandoned sport utility vehicle in Barangay Pampang here Thursday, police said. Senior Superintendent Danilo Bautista, Angeles police chief, said a security guard found the bullet-riddled bodies of Rene Tetangco, Florencio Yap and Dennis Guinto inside a Ford Expedition left at a vacant lot in Timog Park at about 8 a.m. Bautista said the victims were probably killed in another area and were left here to mislead investigators. Apalit Mayor-elect Oscar Tetangco Jr., a nephew of the victim, said he did not know of any enemy of his uncle. He said the family would wait for the results of the investigation to establish the motive in the murders. Bautista said their investigations showed that Yap called his wife at 6 p.m. Wednesday informing her that he was in a fighting cock farm in Mexico town. Yap reportedly told his wife that he would later play poker at a sports club on Friendship Highway in this city. Bautista said this was the last piece of information that Yap's wife got from him before he, Rene Tetangco and Guinto were found dead. (It did not take long for this to drop out of the news. The last I read is that the victims never made it to the Kings Poker Club on Friendship (Korean Town) even though they had a reservation. No doubt the police are still investigating and looking for clues. It will be interesting to see if they ever solve this horrendous crime)

Subic News: The good news is that the closure of the Kalaklan gate has been put on hold. At this time there is no idea how long the delay will be but of course, we are hoping that it will be a very long delay. Who knows, they might put their heads together and figure out how to build a new bridge without closing the old one. UPDATE: Bad news! My buddy Ron C. in Barrio Barretto sent me this discouraging news: "It's a chore now. Kalaklan gate is closed! It really sucks. Especially for those of us that live here. The Mrs and I usually go the base 4 or 5 times a week. By the time I get to base now I could be half way to Angeles City. Bunch of Idiots!" (Yep, I can imagine what a pain in the ass that will be but obviously the SBMA is not all that concerned about those folks living in the Barrio and beyond. I guess it will be a long time before I attempt a visit to Ron's neighborhood).

Puerto GaleraANGELES CITY -- An American national was found dead in his rented apartment in Barangay Balibago here on Saturday. Senior Superintendent Danilo Bautista, Angeles City police director, said that Lorin Smith, 54, was found lifeless lying on the floor of his apartment. Bautista said his wife Cherie Smith, 29, and his relatives went to Antipolo, Rizal on Tuesday leaving behind her husband alone at the apartment. Cherie and her relatives reportedly returned on Saturday and they were surprised when they discovered that Lorin Smith already dead. The victim was suffering from throat cancer and had difficulty walking, police said. Bautista said he has ordered further investigation on the case of Smith although he added there were no signs of struggle. (Ric Sapnu) (Now why the hell would a wife leave a husband alone for five days who was suffering from cancer and was quite ill? Priscilla would never do that to me, even if I told her to do so. For sure there would be someone left behind to keep an eye on me. Most Filipinas would do the same but I suspect that Cherie Smith might have been an exception to the rule).

Last month we had an interesting incident take place in the VFW involving Cliff Wilsey and no, it did not have anything to do with a women's ass. In fact it was a bit scary and fortunately, a very serious, life threatening incident was kind of avoided. Scenario follows: Cliff in his office, 1100 hrs, VFW; Filipino male enters, Cliff knows him slightly; Individual closes the office door, gets behind the chair Cliff is seating in; Cliff still concentrating on his computer; Filipino male puts left arm around neck of Cliff, places right hand, with knife against Cliff's neck and orders Cliff not to turn around. (At this point, if it was me, I would have shit my pants) But, Cliff stood up and started screaming prompting the individual to slash him on the neck with the knife; he jerks away, the knife slips and causes a fairly deep cut along side of throat and side of face, causing a lot of blood spill. Cliff tries to rise but Filipino pushes Cliff; Cliff is pushed to the floor, still yelling for help; Help enters the room in the persons of William Grubbs and Thomas Seidewand Two veteran members who upon hearing the cries for help rush in the office and subdue the perp, but not easily. Fortunately one of the members is rather large and put a serious choke hold on the asshole. They were assisted by the guard after the subject was subdued. Police from Station Four are called, they respond within twenty minutes. They take the asshole whacko Filipino to jail, ask Cliff to submit a complaint and also go to hospital to get a medical report. The attacker is identified as Rodrigo Gomez, Jr. Gomez is charged with attempted robbery and frustrated homicide. But, after review by City Prosecutor Oliver S. Garcia he made the following decisions: Based from the foregoing, the undersigned finds probable cause for attempted murder instead of frustrated homicide against the respondent. It is clear that the respondent attempted to kill the complainant by slashing him on the neck. The attack was sudden and unexpected, thus treachery exists. As to the charge for attempted robbery, the evidence on hand is insufficient to show that the said respondent intended to take anything from the complainant. Thus, the same should be dismissed. Wherefore, the filing of the corresponding information for attempted murder against the respondent is in order while the charge for attempted robbery is dismissed for lack of merit. This decision was rendered on 15 June, 2010 and at this point we will have to wait to see what happens whenever the case comes up in court.

Smile Make OverFortunately, Cliff lives to tell the tale over and over, and over and over again and again to the many folks who are asking him "wow, what happened?" I wonder if I can hire Grubbs and Seidewand as body guards. Well done guys! A few days ago I visited Cliff at the VFW and thanks to the immediate first aid administered by Tony Power

Be advised dear folks that I have been hearing many new reports of attempted and successful pickpocket incidents in Jeepneys. The old drop coins on the floor scam is alive and well. Was pleased to hear from one Expat that it was tried on him in a jeepney recently but he was aware of the scam and was ready for it. He pretended to bend down a bit to pick up the coins but kept an eye on the guy next to him. When he saw the hand in his pocket and the wallet was half out he grabbed the guys arm and nearly broke it, then gave his partner opposite him a flat hand punch to the bridge of his nose and caused some serious damage and the third perp made a hasty retreat. Needless to say the foreigner left the scene as quickly as possible. Regretfully, far too many attempts are successful but it does help to be forewarned and those in the know have been able to avoid the loss of a wallet.

I have been told that the American hustler featured in last month's column is still very active but has shaved his beard and hair. Am hoping I will be able to get an updated picture of him. One report had it that he has been seen carrying a baby while hustling. A new low for a low life? What a major JERK he is!

Recently there have appeared on the internet two more stories about our famous personality in town, Charles Lawrence Surry. One article came from the San Francisco Chronicle and the other was written by a Nick Saint for the "Business Insider". It appears that dear old Charles is engaged in another business adventure that may or may not be on the up and up but it is an interesting story. I am beginning to admire Charlie Boy for his ability to survive here in Angeles City despite being considered by many as not being too nice a guy. The man has to be extremely smart in order to come up with so many business schemes that brings him in loads of money and allows him to live the good life. Of course, none of his business partners, past, present and future can expect to see any of that money, but what the hell, "buyer beware" right? Is anyone familiar with the term "Dingle Pharb"? I never heard of it but it appears to be a new interesting venture that Charles is a part of. For further information on that go to www.parasitesandthieves.ca. For the articles I mentioned at the beginning of this article please go to the following sites: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2010/06/09/businessinsider-the-startup-con-man-2010-6.DTL, http://www.businessinsider.com/the-startup-con-man-2010-6. I think if I was half as smart as Charles Lace, oops, Lawrence Surry I would be a millionaire by now but then I would not have too many friends either. Now, there's a choice for you, friends or money? As you can see by the picture, Charlie eats well and lives high on the hog and can be seen around Fields Ave enjoying himself, especially at Angel Witch, so you know what choice he made. He can usually be seen in the company of good looking women or with the two locals he has around him for protection. He appears to be jovial and likes to talk and I suspect he can be a likable person. Hell, he might even buy you a drink or two if you get to meet him. He is becoming more famous with each passing month and as a result, of course, Angeles City, Philippines gets a bit of publicity, though I wonder if it is the publicity our incoming Mayor would approve of? Be advised I have no personal beef with Charles, I have never met him but he is a subject of interest and folks in town should be aware of who they are dealing with in case they happen to meet him or are considering a business investment with him. Do your research and make your own decisions. Oh yes, you can also Google his name and another site is: www.getchucky.com. Man, what a guy, he is dynamic!

Let me pass on a bit of advance information here. As many of you know, the Sub-Delicious Restaurant on Fields Ave, previously owned by Irene and Tom has been closed down and leased out to our personable Rob Call of Philly Steak fame. In Sep of this year he will be opening the Phillies Sports Grill and from the description of the layout provided to me by Rob it sounds like this will one exciting venue for sports and food buffs. Extensive renovations are on-going now and I can tell you now that the first floor will have the pool tables and the second floor will feature two dart boards. Naturally, Rob will be entering the pool leagues and also the dart league and I imagine that folks will be lining up to get on the teams. I was told that Ted Lerner will be bringing Lee Van Corteza to the Sep opening for a pool demonstration. Lee is the current US Open Pool Tournament champion. This will be one opening that I do not want to miss and I am sure many of you reading this will be doing the same.

Representatives from the Manila Police District, Department of Social Welfare and Development and Department of Labor of Employment raided the LA Cafe at the corner of M.H. Del Pilar and R. Salas streets in Malate around 10:30 p.m. Kabigting said majority of the women are being peddled to to foreigners in Malate district. He said some of those rescued were only waitresses, but are also considered as victims of forced labor and human trafficking. He said the women, particularly the prostitutes, will be "rehabilitated" and provided with alternative livelihood. (This announcement came from an ABS-CBN News report. The LA Cafe has been around for years and is known as a popular spot to pick up free lancers. The report indicated that they were doing this raids and will do others nation-wide because of US pressure on the PI for not cracking down on "Trafficking of women violations". What gets me is using terms like "forced labor" which is utterly ridiculous. There is nothing forced about the jobs the waitresses were doing. Also, "rehabilitated" is a bit of a joke as well. Some will be content to work in a factory somewhere but not doubt most will return to their better paying "forced waitress jobs" at the first opportunity.) More detailed article follows:

MANILA MAYOR ALFREDO Lim ordered city and police officials to go after the owners of a bar in Malate which he personally shut down Tuesday following reports that it was being used as a front for prostitution.

Lim also told the officials to file charges against Anselmo Candado, who was reportedly acting as a dummy for the owners of L.A. Cafe located at the corner of R. Salas and M. H. del Pilar Streets.

According to the mayor, he had information that the real owners of the bar were Australians John Thorpe and Christer Bigander. He asked Manila Police District director Chief Supt. Rodolfo Magtibay to verify this and to file charges against the two foreigners.

Lim earlier ordered the closure of the bar based on the recommendation of Manila department of social welfare (DSW) chief Jay dela Fuente who said that several women, including minors, were working in the establishment as sex workers.

Dela Fuente said that charges for violation of Republic Act 9208 (qualified human trafficking) and Republic Act 7610 (antichild abuse law) had been filed against the alleged managers of the bar identified as Emelinda Viray, Rodalyn Taja and Grace Perez; supervisor Lilia Montanilla; and Carla Serrano and Nora Abellosa, who reportedly served as pimps.

Last Thursday, authorities rounded up over 200 women, including minors, during a raid on the establishment after the International Justice Mission wrote to Lim to complain about the bar which it claimed was engaged in prostitution.

Lim, meanwhile, ordered his men to make sure that the bar does not reopen even under a new name or business entity. He also asked Magtibay to direct all station commanders to stop similar establishments from operating in their areas.

This is something new that a reader sent to me. Folks here in the Philippines might find this useful. I signed up for it just in case I decide to do some on-line shopping. Check it out at http://pobox.ph/.

ANGELES CITY -- Angeles Electric Corporation (AEC) reportedly cut the power supply of City Hall after the city failed to settle P18 million of its obligations. The electric company has to disconnect its power services to the City Government as part of its drive to enjoin its consumers in keeping their accounts updated. (The AEC is always quick to go after average consumers when payments are late so it is nice to know that they are going after the big guys as well. This was reported by the Sun-Star and there was no response from the outgoing Mayor).

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines, June 17, 2010 (AFP) – One of the suspected Muslim militants who kidnapped an elderly Swiss man was shot dead in the southern Philippines hours after their hostage was rescued, police said Thursday. Pursuing policemen shot at three suspected abductors of 72-year-old Carl Rieth late Wednesday, killing one while two others escaped, said Senior Superintendent Edwin Ocampo. At least eight heavily armed men snatched Rieth, a businessman and long-time resident of Zamboanga, from his beachfront home on April 4. The kidnappers abandoned their hostage when they saw a rescue team closing in, the military said on Wednesday. The police and military had insisted that no ransom was paid for Rieth. But while no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction of Rieth, regional military chief Lieutenant General Benjamin Dolorfino said Wednesday the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group was suspected of being behind the crime. Basilan is also a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf extremists, who have frequently kidnapped foreigners for ransom in the past and are listed by the United States as a terrorists.

(Updated 1:30 p.m.) An unidentified assailant shot dead a German hotel official in Makati City's Central Business District on Thursday morning, police said. Interviewed by GMANews.TV by phone, Southern Police district head Chief Superintendent Jose Arne delos Santos said a gunman clad in a jacket shot Sergio Mazza just after he left a bakery along Dela Rosa corner Perea Streets. Mazza, who lives at the Shangri Grand Tower that is within the vicinity of the scene of the crime, was the executive assistant manager of Makati Shangri-La Hotel's food and beverage section. He was on his way to work when he was gunned down. Meanwhile, the management of Makati Shangri-La said it is working closely with police authorities who are conducting the investigation. "We are extremely saddened by this loss and would like to express our sincerest condolences to his family... We are confident that the police will make all the facts known at the appropriate time and in accordance with the prevailing regulations," said the hotel's Communications department in an e-mailed statement to GMANews.TV. — RSJ, GMANews.TV

Wherever you may live, regardless of the country, one must be very careful about the people you decide to help. In the year 2008 a young American was desperately trying to borrow money to get back to the States. He was broke, had a wife and kid living in Capas, Tarlac and wanted to get back to the States to start a job that was offered to him. He tried to borrow money from an expat that cashes checks for folks here in AC but this person was not in a position to help. He was referred to me and initially I turned him down. But, after listening to his continued cries for help I relented and lent him the money he needed to get out of the country. His name is James Fager and came by way of Fairview, Oregon. He said he had a job offer from the Rainbow Deli, Inc in Gladstone, Oregon and would send me my money back as soon as he got a job and a few paychecks under his belt. Needless to say, yep, you guessed it, to date I have not heard from this character in two years. He did send me a text on 2 Apr, 2008, copping a hard luck story and his last words were "I will get you the money as soon as I can Sir, please believe me!!. Bull Shit!!! He was a loser then and no doubt must still be. I had reports last year that he was back in the Philippines but have not heard from him. So, all I can do is put his name out so if this James Fager ever approaches anyone here for for financial help ignore him but then tell me where I can find him so I can have a very serious conversation with him. Gerlinda & Ted Marlatt, Fairview, Oregon, if you are involved with this low life please be advised that he is not an honest, reliable man and has a tendency to tell tall stories. I do not think Jim would be a trusted employee for anyone. Needless to say, if anyone needs financial help for any problem, please do not waste your time seeing this old, grumpy horse.

Here is a royal pain in the ass. It is the corner of A. Santos and Fields Ave where Kokomo's is. At one time parking was allowed only on one side of the street and it was one way going towards Fields Ave. Now, there is parking on both sides with far too may tricycles parking on both sides as well as a couple of vehicles and it is a two way street. This is just one example of how traffic enforcement in the entertainment area has deteriorated over the last three years. Can we expect some improvements in the future?

TAPS

This is a bit personal me. Our very close friend, and Godfather to our son, retired City Engineer Roque Dungca passed away from a heart attack at age 75. I have known Roque for a very long time and I valued our friendship. Like most heart attacks, it was unexpected. He was driving to City Hall when he had to stop and get a trike to the hospital. Regretfully, he died soon after arrival at the hospital. We did not see each other all that often but I had the highest respect for this man who was a member of the Knights of Columbus. When we stopped by the wake it was with a heavy heart but it was good to see his wife and also his son who remembered me from when he was much younger. It was also good to meet his brother who came all the way from Chicago and I like to think became a new friend of my family.

THIRTY WONDERFUL YEARS

Neither Meng McTavish or husband Bruce could believe that their years could pass so quickly. Last month they celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Angeles International Travel Center (AITC) at the Angeles City Sports and Country Club with a large gathering of invited guests. The well known International Referee, Bruce McTavish, gave a few welcoming words to attendees in which he described how the business started so long ago and it's development over the years. The Department of Tourism, Region III Director, Ronnie Tiotuico was on hand and gave a complimentary short speech. A large crowd was on hand for the event and I saw a lot of familiar faces and the more events I attend at the Sports Club the more impressed I become with the venue. The food that was presented was terrific and I will tell you this, the great big piece of beef that was on hand was absolutely terrific. It was provided by Bruce and was imported from the US. I told Bruce that the next time I have a special party I will get in touch with him to place an order. Thirty years ago we were all a bit younger and there are a few Expats here that witnessed the opening of the AITC and I was one of them. Needless to say, for thirty years they have represented a high degree of professionalism that has made their Agency a favorite of travelers. I certainly would like to still be around for their 40th anniversary and still be healthy enough to chow down on another order of that beef.

TOURIST OF THE MONTH

It is always great to meet a fine man with a good Irish name and so I was more than pleased to meet Tom Delaney one fine afternoon at my stable. He made it up the stairs to my office with a bag of hot sauces that he picked up in San Diego, CA and that added to making my day a perfect one. Tom visits Angeles City every six months and always stays at the Orchid Inn because everyone knows him there and it is like going home; of course, the convenient location is a big plus as well. Tom is a friend of Tom Dryden as well and plans to visit him in Mexico. He met Tom many years ago when he worked in Subic as a civilian for two years, following up with a six year gig in Japan. Tom has a 21 year old daughter that he is mighty proud of and was happy to report that she turned 21 on 29 May so Christine, let me send you a late happy birthday wish. A few of the hot sauces that Tom dropped off I decided to make available to customers at my bar/restaurant which is unusual as a great majority of those given to me I do not open but keep for display unless I have a duplicate. Then comes the question of when do I start making all the hot sauces accessible? I really don't know but I do not think I will wait until after I am dead. I guess I will monitor my health and if I start to go downhill, well, then it is time to buy a refrigerator just for the hot sauces so they can be stored properly after opening. Until then, thanks to folks like Tom Delaney and many others the collection will continue to grow. I can say one thing, for those of you who say no one can make your bowl of chili hot enough - Hee, Hee, let me try!

THE GOLDEN NILE

I do believe that it has been six month since I checked out the night time activities at the Golden Nile. Some folks told me that the new dance team Richard Agnew put in there was "hot" and that they put on a pretty good show. Needless to say, the opportunity to throw in a few pictures of some good looking ladies is something that I have to do. Naturally, I do this only for the readers of this column and am willing to sacrifice my evening in front of the TV for you. A Saturday night came up and I made it to Fields Ave and after eating at Rob's Black Angus Steak House, met Rob and his lovely lady later in the evening and made it over to the Golden Nile for the 10 PM show. Truthfully, it was damn good, entertaining as all hell and the ladies were really into it. I liked it so much that I am thinking of taking Mrs Horse with me on a return trip. Of course that would mean I could not flirt with the dancers but what the hell, let the Mrs have a night out. The show is named "The Marilyn Manson Show" and it is performed by the "Daddy's Girls" Dance Group. It is different, entertaining and a welcome change from the normal somnolent dancers you see in so many clubs. By all means, you should catch this bit of entertainment at least once while you are in town.

WORLD CUP FINALS AT THE STOTSENBERG HOTEL

For sure there will be a hell of a lot of clubs and restaurants around town that will be available for viewing the World Cup Football finals but I would like to feature one location in which I think for great viewing pleasure in a very comfortable setting you can't go wrong with planning on being at the Stotsenberg Hotel on Clark Freeport Zone. You don't have to wait for the finals because they will be showing all the games at the "S-Bar" and have been doing so since they started in June. You see, I did not know about this until it was too late to put in last month's column so I figure it isn't too late to catch a few games in July and for sure make it over there for the finals. In fact, you can have a bit of fun on the finals night in that they will be having a country beer drinking contest and many other fun and games activities. There is free entry as well. As I write this I see that the US has not done all that badly. They are still hanging in there but I doubt that they will be in the finals. I am not a soccer fan, it drives me nuts watching guys kicking a ball back and forth and sit around for hours just to see one point scored. I would rather see a highlight film of the activities but I remember years ago watching a finals match in a bar with a bunch of fanatical fans and it was a lot of fun. I think I even placed a bet and won but that was because my friend George Brown gave me a good tip. Who knows, I may be checking out the action at the Stotsenberg on finals night just for the hell of it and I like the place anyway. Maybe I can place a bet with the manager, Liisa Lindner, but not until I check with the experts first.

jul-images/Thi-Hi 11TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY

The grand old man, Derry, (He is two months older than me) sprung for a few pesos and put on a very nice anniversary celebration. Second drinks were free and a nice meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and veggie was provided. By now, many folks know that this is one of my favorite drinking spots as I enjoy the ladies there and listening to that cranky old owner. He was in fine form this day as well as he was complaining to Josie constantly, but Josie is used to it and lets it go in one ear and out the other. Josie is the glue that holds this Club together. I really appreciated the gift of a jul-images/Thi-Hi shirt and will wear it proudly along with a few others who were lucky enough to get a shirt. Regretfully, I was not able to stay as long as I wanted to but managed to be present for the cutting of the cake and it was quite tasty. Many familiar faces were on hand and by golly, I had a hell of a good time as did everyone else who was on hand. Well done Derry, I am sure looking forward to number 12. I got to thinking about having an anniversary party at my place but when I added up the years I decided to wait two more years and celebrate number 25 and you all are invited! Bring money though, I am more stingy than Derry.

JUST ANOTHER MEMORY

I realize that the demolition of a building or even just a major renovation should not make me sad because quite often what replaces that building is something better than what went before it. Never-the-less, I still feel sad because each old building had a past, it represented memories and those memories belong to the old timers, those who drank there, those who met women there and those who enjoyed listening and watching Johnny Longhair belt out some songs at the Blueberry Hill Club. Up the road, on the corner, Sub-Delicious is gone and is now undergoing extensive renovation. It will have a new look and a new life. The history of Sub-Delicious is a short one involving love, a dream, a man and a woman, anger, fighting, a relationship gone to hell, and lives messed up. It was a short history but a long sad story. The memories connected with Blueberry Hill are longer but much less dramatic. I do not know yet, what will replace Blueberry but with so many buildings and businesses in this ever changing scene in the entertainment area, nothing is permanent but the memories linger and new stories will be mixed in with the new. For now, I will sit at the window of the Orchid Inn with a cup of coffee and watch this old building get a new face and wait for somebody to sit down and say, "Hey, isn't that where the Blueberry Hill Club was? Man, do I have some stories about that place." Naturally, I will smile and say, "great, tell me a few" and then maybe I can add a few stories to my old memory bank.

HAVE A MANGO MATE

Many years ago I had a wonderful old Aussie Gentleman by the name of Ken Richards playing on my pool team. I keep trying to remember how many years ago it was but I figure around 7 or 8 at least. Ken was a quiet lad who loved to play pool and played on a few different teams before he ended up with me. He lived just a bit down the street from my Hotel and was a bit slow getting around but he was reliable as all get out. In the yard of his house he has a couple of Australian Mango trees and he was very proud of them. He knew I had a farm and he gave me a very young tree to plant. I carted it out to the farm and had it planted and named it "Ken's Tree" but never figured it would grow to maturity. Not too long after that Ken became ill and after about a month passed away. I missed him but was glad that I had his tree growing in my field and figured he would be pleased about that. It has grown but it never produced any fruit until three years ago when we discovered one fruit. That was it, one big round Australian mango. I gave it to Ken's wife. The next year, we had four and thought that was great. Then, this year, just last month that tree produced around 50 big ole mangos and by golly, they were pretty tasty after turning a nice golden yellow. This time I was giving them away as fast as I could and then had the idea of finding some Australians to give them to. I ended up one night dropping into the Bare Assets Bar and asked the owner if he could find a few Aussies I could give some mangos to. He was more than pleased to help out so later in the evening I found Wayne, Leroy and Peter enjoying a few drinks and presented them with a mango each. They told me that these mangos were called "King George Mango" and I will take their word for that. Imagine my surprise to see that one tree put out so many of these giant fruits that I never knew existed before Ken gave me that tree. In a way, old Ken Richards lives on at my farm and I am hoping that next year I can give even more away. But, I discovered I liked them and will peel and freeze a few of them for myself and each year, raise a glass of beer in memory of old Ken and pass on a great big "Thanks Mate".

I WOULD IF I COULD

Would you believe that two ladies from the same Club wanted to be featured this month? Well, what really happened is I went to see my pool team play at the Brass Knob and figured I would combine business and pleasure and asked Roy to pick out a gal for me. He got all excited and went out pick one out and then his wife picked one out as well and wow, I had two to choose from and decided to present them both. On the left is Ann (Angel), 21 years old from Tacloban. She has worked for two months and is the cashier (she put on the outfit specially for the picture). She has finished high school and 2 years of computer science and would like to finish her studies. She would like to meet a nice guy between 30 and 50 years old. Her Email address is: angel_colin2006@yahoo.com.

On the right we have Tony Rose, 19 years old from Angeles City. She has no boyfriend and no children. She has worked at the BK for one month and has not had any high school at all. She would like to be able to go back to school to obtain her High School degree. She speaks excellent english and is self taught by reading the dictionary. She would like to meet a good man between 50 to 70 years old. I asked her if 72 would be ok and she said "sure, why not". Who was I to argue, she instantly became my favorite. She has 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Regretfully, she has not had time to get an Email address so if you are interested you could drop a message to the Brass Knob.

So there you have it. Two ladies to choose from, both of whom look pretty good to me. I must say that the Brass Knob is a great place to visit. They have the whole package, rooms to rent, bar, restaurant, separate pool area and plenty of good looking women. As an extra bonus you have the Stampede and Cherry Clubs right next door. It is also the pick-up point for the Southern Cross bus as well. You know, the more I look better Tony Rose looks to me, what say you?

RETURN OF THE GOODWINS

Steve and Richard Goodwin were special visitors last month. They first stopped by in 2008 when they delivered two cans of Australian beer for me to taste. They were a bit disappointed in not seeing their picture in my column back then and no doubt that was probably because I lost my notes again. They were surprised to find that I still had one of those cans of been in my fridge. I would have had both but sometime this year I gave one to a customer who professed a strong urge to drink one. It was a pleasure for me to open up the one can of Tooey left and split it three ways. Steve was reluctant to give a taste since he said that it probably no good after sitting for two years. What the hell, we drank it anyway and no one got sick. The picture on the far right was taken in 2008 so everyone looks pretty much the same. They are from North Narrabeen, Sydney, Australia and this time Steve delivered to me an Outback Sauce Collection that was quite unique consisting of six bottles. It was a pretty heavy package to carry so far. Steve brought his Mrs along on this trip and son Richard was more than happy to make this second trip. He is in his last year of college studying to be a PA teacher. I thought Richard would be looking for a nice Filipina during his trip but he is serious over some Australian lass by the name of Janine. She is a lawyer, 23 years old and Steve (Dad) says she is pretty good looking but wears too much make-up. I tried to advise Richard that he was making a mistake but he would not hear any of that. I pointed out the charms of a nice Filipina and that he should think twice about marrying an Australian lawyer and predicted that after 6 1/2 years of marriage he would be back here, single again, regretting he did not listen to me. I think he is still laughing at me. Steve is a driver for the Royal Far West Company that picks up country children to take them to medical appointments. They make the medical appointments for the kids and in addition to taking them to the appointments they also provide a day out to the beach. While in Angeles City Steve and family are staying at the Orchid Inn.

This is getting a bit long but I have to take the time to mention Danny Harris who is from Alice Springs, Australia and drives one of those "Road Trains" that fascinates me. In fact he drives a "fuel train". Danny is fighting lung cancer but according to Steve he is one hell of a personality and, through the internet, met and married 25 year old Lynn who is from Daran, Samar. Coincidentally, this is where Steve's wife is from and they met Danny in Daran, while they were both there visiting. There are not many expats in Daran, and Danny had heard about Steve and sought him out so that he would have someone to talk to. I was impressed with the story about Danny and some year I would love to be able to see one of those road trains up close and maybe even sit in one. Danny is not letting a bout with cancer slow him down and the picture of him and his sweet wife together is a sight to behold. Needless to say, Danny is a pretty large man and Lynn is looks quite petite beside him. I wonder if anyone from Alice Springs reads this column. There is another place I am curious about and that is "White Cliffs" and I would really be surprised if anyone ever heard of Harry the Horse there.

INTRODUCING MISS BEVERLY MORALA

I met Beverly through a very good friend of mine. She is the sister of his wife. I was surprised to find that this lovely, educated, 5'5" lady was still single at 29 years of age. I told her that I am always anxious to meet a lady such as she so I can introduce her to my single readers who often ask, "how do I meet a nice lady in the Philippines?". I wondered if she would mind if I introduced her in my column and I was pleased when she agreed. Let me provide some pertinent details about Beverly. She lives with her mother, brother and two sisters in the same house in which she was born 29 years ago in the Philippine military base of Camp Evangelista at Cagayan de Oro, the Northern part of Mindanao. Her father was a military Staff Sergeant and served in the Military Police. Her father was very strict so she did not venture out of the Military Camp until he passed away a few years ago. She graduated from the University, Cagayan de Oro with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Psychology in 2003. Since graduation she has worked in various hospitals and rehabilitation centers in Cagayan de Oro. She is business minded and worked to improve her earning capacity by operating small businesses such as a small money lending operation to military personnel on the base, ran two hair salons and a 24 hours food outlet in Cagayan de Oro. She has traveled to Australia to visit her sister in Queensland and it is her ambition and desire to return to that country one day.

As i visited with Beverly I found that she is a very quiet person and noticeably shy, no doubt because of her strict childhood and adolescence. She does not drink or smoke and like most Filipina was raised as a Catholic. For you guys that like to eat be advised that Beverly enjoys cooking and experiencing international cuisine. She told me that "I pray that one day I will meet my partner for life. A good man that I can faithfully serve as his wife, a man who can accept me for what I am today". I'll tell you this guys, this woman appears to be too good to be true. This is a traditional Filipina that any man would be proud to call his wife. I do not think I could find a better woman to recommend. I am very impressed with her. She passed on to me that she could be contacted via e-mail at beverly_morala@yahoo.com. I hope I have helped her to find that "partner for life".

STOPPING IN AT THE LEWIS GRAND HOTEL

I always enjoy stopping in at the Lewis Grand Hotel, if only to see what GM James E. Bush is wearing that day. On the day I stopped in I spotted him in a great looking suit, shirt and tie looking quite professional. He was happy to announce that they are introducing a new menu and of course, I had to take a picture. I requested that a few of the good looking staff join in and a very happy picture was taken. One of the ladies, Reservations Clerk Jeyshell stood out from the rest, mainly because she was still single and looked good as well. She is 5'7" tall and if you would like to communicate with her then send an e-mail to rainelintag@yahoo.com. By the way, she is a local lass from Angeles City. On the way out I saw these two guys talking at the desk who were staying at the Hotel and were into tatoos. They are both single, Alex Bambam (lives in Guam) and Stephon (lives in Tijuana, Mexico). I included them for two reasons, one for any lady readers I might have who like chest shots and tattoos and secondly, shit, I can't think of the other reason. I guess just to show off the tattoos they were so proud of. I could only think "hell, that had to hurt". Like I said, it is fun to stop in at the Lewis Grand Hotel and it's a good place to stay at as well. Love the pool!

Email me at jimharryhorse@gmail.comHoly smokes, 4th of July time. I must cook up some hotdogs and hamburgers and do my God Bless America thing. For sure I will certainly be thinking of our US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and wishing I could visit there and shake some hands. But I know some of the troops read this column so guys and gals in uniform, happy 4th of July. If anyone wants to send me an Email, just put your curser on the horse and my address can be seen at the bottom of your screen. I suspect that there may be some fireworks set off but am not sure where. I will be out trying to get a few pictures. I suspect that we will be seeing a bit more rain in July then in June so make sure you carry an umbrella with you or a good rain hat. One thing about about living here, if you get wet it does not take long to dry off. I am really happy to see the Lexus construction taking place after waiting so long, additionally, the forthcoming Phillies Sports Grill will be an welcome addition to the entertainment area. I will start taking pictures next month. Right now they have just about gutted the interior and the rebuilding process is underway. For sure that will be one of my watering holes on Fields Ave. I have been told that Rob is always kind to Horses so with that I am out of here. See you in July, stop by my stable and say hello.

HARRY THE HORSE POLITICAL RANTINGS - SKIP THIS PART

Is the US Assistant Secretary of State, Michael L. Posner a super anti-American moron or just a plain radical left wing zealot that does not like the American way of life? Why is this guy still in the position he now holds, why hasn't he been fired? This guy Posner kisses the ass of the Chinese in an interview about human rights and then he himself brings up the Arizona law which, by itself is a great law, but Posner brings it up to a Chinese Government that crushes any human rights standards on a daily basis. Posner used to be the head of the "Human Rights First" organization, a very left wing outfit and we end up having him in the State Department. Posner, along with US Attorney General Eric Holder are prime examples of the people Obama appoints with the intention of destroying America. Keep your eye on his newest nominee to the US Supreme Court. Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen Degenerate must be dancing for joy while, no doubt, America weeps.

This was sent in reference to my US flag comment last month: WRONG PROTOCOL - International practice forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another in time of peace. The USA Flag should, however, be raised first and lowered last, unless the number of flags permits their being raised and lowered simultaneously. With the flag of one nation, the USA Flag should be on the left of the observer facing the flags; both should be at the same height. When crossed with a flag of another sovereign nation, the USA Flag should be on the left of the observer facing the flags; its staff should be in front of the staff of the other flag. In a line of flags representing a number of sovereign nations, where there are three or more making an odd number of flags, the USA Flag should be flown in the centre when only one USA Flag is available. If there are an even number of flags representing a number of sovereign nations, the USA Flag should be flown on the left of the observer facing the flags. In an enclosed circle of flags representing a number of sovereign nations, the USA Flag should be flown on the flagpole immediately opposite the main entrance to a building or arena. Where two USA Flags are available, one should be flown at each end of the line, with the flags representing the sovereign nations in between. Regards Andrew K. Patterson. (Andy, you are absolutely, technically correct. My comment was simple and direct, don't fuck with the American flag, if you don't understand then maybe the use of a baseball bat on your damn heads will get the point across. I do not believe the Hispanics who insult our flag and country are interested in taking the time to read your technical explanation. I'm not even sure they can read English)

For many months I have been saying to anyone who will listen that President Obama is a puppet for a hidden, behind the scenes, rich and powerful group of men who developed Obama to do exactly what he is doing to America now. The aim, no doubt, is to turn America into a weakened socialistic, extreme left wing society that bends to the will of a World Order. Now, even the UN has the audacity to criticize the US use of Drones to kill terrorists. When will we figure out that the UN is a meeting place for anti-American nations bent on weakening the strength of America. They want our money but will stab us in the back at every opportunity. But, I digress, getting back to the article by Eddie Sessions, it is good to know that I am not the only one writing that Obama is a puppet of a great conspiracy, but the question is, is he doing so knowingly, or unknowingly? Regardless, one thing is for sure, he scares the shit out of me.

Wall Street Journal Sizes up Obama - They've Got Him Figured Out

A short article from the Wall Street Journal that needs to be read by every level headed American!!! A "deadly" article regarding Obama, at the Wall Street Journal, which today is the most widely circulated newspaper in America . - Article from the Wall Street Journal - by Eddie Sessions:

"I have this theory about Barack Obama. I think he's led a kind of make-believe life in which money was provided and doors were opened because at some point early on somebody or some group took a look at this tall, good looking, half-white, half-black, young man with an exotic African/Muslim name and concluded he could be guided toward a life in politics where his facile speaking skills could even put him in the White House. In a very real way, he has been a young man in a very big hurry. Who else do you know has written two memoirs before the age of 45? "Dreams of My Father" was published in 1995 when he was only 34 years old. The "Audacity of Hope" followed in 2006. If, indeed, he did write them himself. There are some who think that his mentor and friend, Bill Ayers, a man who calls himself a "communist with a small 'c'" was the real author. His political skills consisted of rarely voting on anything that might be deemed controversial. He went from a legislator in the Illinois legislature to the Senator from that state because he had the good fortune of having Mayor Daley's formidable political machine at his disposal. He was in the U.S. Senate so briefly that his bid for the presidency was either an act of astonishing self-confidence or part of some greater game plan that had been determined before he first stepped foot in the Capital. How, many must wonder, was he selected to be a 2004 keynote speaker at the Democrat convention that nominated John Kerry when virtually no one had ever even heard of him before? He outmaneuvered Hillary Clinton in primaries. He took Iowa by storm. A charming young man, an anomaly in the state with a very small black population, he oozed "cool" in a place where agriculture was the antithesis of cool. He dazzled the locals. And he had an army of volunteers drawn to a charisma that hid any real substance. And then he had the great good fortune of having the Republicans select one of the most inept candidates for the presidency since Bob Dole. And then John McCain did something crazy. He picked Sarah Palin, an unknown female governor from the very distant state of Alaska . It was a ticket that was reminiscent of 1984's Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro and they went down to defeat.

The mainstream political media fell in love with him. It was a schoolgirl crush with febrile commentators like Chris Mathews swooning then and now over the man. The venom directed against McCain and, in particular, Palin, was extraordinary.

Now, nearly a full year into his first term, all of those gilded years leading up to the White House have left him unprepared to be President. Left to his own instincts, he has a talent for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. It swiftly became a joke that he could not deliver even the briefest of statements without the ever-present Tele-Prompters. Far worse, however, is his capacity to want to "wish away" some terrible realities, not the least of which is the Islamist intention to destroy America and enslave the West. Any student of history knows how swiftly Islam initially spread. It knocked on the doors of Europe, having gained a foothold in Spain. The great crowds that greeted him at home or on his campaign "world tour" were no substitute for having even the slightest grasp of history and the reality of a world filled with really bad people with really bad intentions. Oddly and perhaps even inevitably, his political experience, a cakewalk, has positioned him to destroy the Democrat Party's hold on power in Congress because in the end it was never about the Party. It was always about his communist ideology, learned at an early age from family, mentors, college professors, and extreme leftist friends and colleagues. Obama is a man who could deliver a snap judgment about a Boston police officer who arrested an "obstreperous" Harvard professor-friend, but would warn Americans against "jumping to conclusions" about a mass murderer at Fort Hood who shouted "Allahu Akbar." The absurdity of that was lost on no one. He has since compounded this by calling the Christmas bomber "an isolated extremist" only to have to admit a day or two later that he was part of an al Qaeda plot. He is a man who could strive to close down our detention facility at Guantanamo even though those released were known to have returned to the battlefield against America . He could even instruct his Attorney General to afford the perpetrator of 9/11 a civil trial when no one else would ever even consider such an obscenity. And he is a man who could wait three days before having anything to say about the perpetrator of yet another terrorist attack on Americans and then have to elaborate on his remarks the following day because his first statement was so lame. The pattern repeats itself. He either blames any problem on the Bush administration or he naively seeks to wish away the truth.

Knock, knock. Anyone home? Anyone there? Barack Obama exists only as the sock puppet of his handlers, of the people who have maneuvered and manufactured this pathetic individual's life. When anyone else would quickly and easily produce a birth certificate, this man has spent over a million dollars to deny access to his. Most other documents, the paper trail we all leave in our wake, have been sequestered from review. He has lived a make-believe life whose true facts remain hidden. We laugh at the ventriloquist's dummy, but what do you do when the dummy is President of the United States of America ?"

Recently I saw a video clip about Muslims demonstrating in the streets of England against returning British soldiers from Iraq. On one side of the street you had these Muslim fanatics holding signs calling the soldiers baby killers and so many other negative sayings. On the other side of the street, as these brave soldiers were marching through, were patriotic British citizens waving flags and yelling at the Muslims. This is a scene that no doubt, will eventually come to America if we continue to cater to Muslims in America. Right now, there is a plan to build a Mosque in New York near the site of the destroyed World Trade Center, a prime example of how Muslims everywhere want to destroy America and the New York City government might allow a building to be erected that will allow Muslims to spit in our faces. What a disgrace! Additionally, the Imam of this Mosque believes in having Sharia Law brought into our US court systems just like Britain has now. Wake up America!
