Ah, it is February and romance is in the air. It is time for the Horse to travel in luxury and take Priscilla out to a great evening at the Holiday Inn. Naturally, James, GM at the Lewis Grand will deliver us to the Hotel in a style deserving of a handsome Horse like me. I am telling Priscilla that the three ladies are included in the evening but somehow, that message is not being well received. No problem, I have until the 13th to convince her otherwise. Meanwhile good folks, even though romance is constant 12 months out of every year here in Angeles City, February still has a special meaning to one and all. The flower ladies are making a fortune in rose sales, the candy man that goes around to the bars every day is selling out all his chocolates and the restaurants are booked solid. All the ladies in the Clubs are anxious to dispense all the love you can handle and there is plenty to go around. So drop what you are doing, book a flight right away and get on over here for great weather, great food and love, love, love. For those guys going through divorces, finalize the paperwork, pay off the lawyers, grab a drink or two, rejoice and then get your butts over here. Surprisingly, I met three senior folks last month that have done just that and they are happier than hogs in slop.

THE MAILBAG

Hi Horse, its Bob who used to own Moons bar. I was wondering how I could get a message across in your magazine regarding the state of the bars in Diamond today. The reason being is that the owner of Moons bar is bringing Fields Ave to Diamond. He kicked out his pool team and card players. Now charges p20 for a game of pool and p45 for a lousy cup of coffee. He also charges p200 for a ladies drink beer and p2000 for a bell ring even if there is only one girl in the bar. Furthermore he is going to buy Pearly Gates and he wants to buy the old Hellsingborg bar across the street. He wants it all to himself with no competition. Diamond has for a long time been a cheap and friendly drinking area for expats and that is all about to change. DEATH TO DIAMOND. A guy went in there a little while ago and rang the bell 4 times and was given a bill of p8.000. He didn't have enough money to pay, so he said he had to go to the bank. He was followed to the bank. He obviously didn't see the sign that said p2000 bell ring. Hope to hear back from you.

Regards Bob. (Well Bob, this owner obviously has a pot full of money and also does not give a rats ass care about the old Expat customers that are a mainstay in the Diamond Subdivision area. No doubt his aim is to change the image of the bars there and try to attract tourists to his bars that do not worry about paying higher prices. The one problem he may face is that no matter what he does, he is not located on Fields Ave and Diamond is not a tourist attraction. He will have to do a lot more than raise prices to be successful. The charge of P200 or more for a "beer" LD is something that a few bars are doing now. It is a "hustle the customer" charge and is called a "large" ladies drink. Bob, what is the cost of a regular ladies drink at Moon's, it should be less? I will try to visit the place and find out for myself. The bottom line is that the owner can do what he wants and time will tell whether he makes or loses money. Meanwhile, look for a more reasonable, friendlier place to drink and play cards but remember, business is business and P45 for a cup of coffee isn't all that bad. I charge P45 for all my local drinks, coffee, water, soft drinks included. My ladies drinks are P100, "large drinks" not allowed! I must point out Bob, that normal ladies drinks are served in smaller glasses and usually the alcohol content is less than a regular shot. Naturally, the lady does not take as much time to consume that drink as would be taken if a bottle of beer was served. Most ladies do not like the beer to begin with and will take a hell of a long time to consume it. Therefore, the increased price for a large ladies drink (Beer). It is a matter of "time and motion", the bar loses money if the lady takes too long to finish a drink. Time will tell what happens with Moon's Bar and whether his change of direction is the right one or not. That will be determined at the cash register)

Hi Harry, I not sure if we have meet or not, things get a bit fussy when I am in AC for some unknown reason. I know of you having lived off and on in AC since 1998. (Actually 1977 - 81 and Jan 84 to present) I did not know Steve but became good friends with his room mate a few days after Steve was killed. I think I call him “dead man walking” at the bar daddy Bruce was working in at the time and he laughed which is what he needed at the time. I believe that they were subleasing a house I had a long team lease on in Marisol when it happened. The bitch was still living in a house in Josephville. I remember the room mate telling the next day or too when he was at the police box by Roadhouse that he saw one of the guys that did it and they caught him because of it. He could not believe the guy just walked up there. I saw the show on the BBC as well, the video on the beach of her talking to her boy friend. Unreal. I followed the story closely and was so impressed and happy with the way Steve’s mom made sure justice was done. Thanks so much for posting the picture of the kids, it shows her efforts were so well worth it. I can remember when she had to “buy” the one kid from the evil bitch mother. How goes it ya old Stallion. It's Pat Patterson from Hawaii. I would like to take this opportunity to let the good readers of this column know what you Harry rarely mention. That would be the Stable where Harry takes his saddle off. It is conveniently located on the strip but far enough away to overt the noise. Last time I hopped a Jeepney from the Stable it was around 6 piso to get to the station at the beginning of Fields ave. The Angeles City VFW is located a short 9 iron away from the stable and I do suggest stopping in there for a very cold beer. The grub is top notch and reasonable. I have sent many folks your way over the past 20 or more years with top notch reports coming back my way every time. As of recent I have sent two cherry boys (cherry to Angeles anyway) to your stable and they are headed back your way with me in March. To anyone who is interested in a clean, quiet and very friendly place to hang your hat in Angeles shoot the horse an e-mail and see if there is a stall available in the stable. Like I said Harry does not promote the Stable so I thought I'd toot your horn a little Harry See ya in March Mr. Horse, got a new bottle of hot stuff to add to the collection I'm betting you don't have this kind yet, Pat out.. (Ah, thanks Pat, you leave this humble old man speechless. Many thanks for your good words. Will be looking forward to seeing that new hot sauce)

Hi Harry, I really got a kick out of the picture you used to open your January newsletter. Jessica and Josh are a couple of the cutest kids I’ve ever seen. I truly applaud Mrs. Davis for all her efforts and am happy for her success. I just ordered her book from Amazon so I can read her story. I really do hope you’ll continue to print their pictures from time to time. It would be nice to watch them grow up and that would really stick it to that murderous bitch. I've been here for almost 2 years, and I've been shy to introduce myself and expand contacts to other expats in the area up until now. I've worked a couple of jobs here in AC since my arrival... up until recently. I was hoping you or other expats you know may have opportunities for an American in the area? I have no guaranteed income at the moment so the situation is getting pretty dire. I have 10 years experience in customer service (inbound, outbound, field) sales (inbound, outbound, field), managerial experience, training, team building, etc. If you can help me out, point me in the right direction, or pass my name along I'd be forever in your debt. Thank You, J.L. ( J. L., you will not like my reply. For years I have been writing and advising people not to come here to live until they have taken care of business. "business" meaning stay in the States or any other country one might come from and work until you are eligible for a monthly retirement. Do not come here to live without some type of monthly income or a job offer. Some folks have worked at contractor jobs overseas and make enough money at an early age to live here or some work for three months at a time and then come back here and then head off to work again.

I have seen so many like you that get here, like it, get married, have kids, then run out of money. At 31 you are too young to be here in this type of situation. I can't help you. What I will do is put your comments in my column but will not use your name. If someone locally writes or contacts me with a job offer I will provide him your Email address. I do not know what kind of jobs you have had here in AC but I will guess that they were not career building jobs or ones that would lead to a retirement check.

I am sorry to be so blunt but that is the New York in me, I don't bullshit people. The only direction I would point you to is the airport where you should get on a plane and get back to the US where you might be able to get a job. I presume you have a college education so that should help. I wish I could help you and others like you but I do not have those kind of connections. You say you were in customer service so I do not understand how you can be shy. Get over it, get aggressive, beat the bushes, get on the internet and find a job somewhere, anywhere. Hell, join the Merchant Marines where you can work on ships and come back and forth here between jobs. Meet other expats here, not just Americans, talk it up anywhere and everywhere in town, you may fall into something. Good luck.)

Thank you for the response. My reasons with still being here is a book upon itself that I didn't want to whine to you about. Believe me, I'd have done hopped on a plane along time ago if that option had of been financially viable. A series of unfortunate events has kept me locked here for the time being. Shy was a bad choice of words to use, a better word would have been, I'm embarrassed. With the few I have talked too, it usually starts off with, "what the hell are you doing here?" lol. I had already asked months back to merican services for destitute assistance to return to the states, they just referred me to AAP who never responded back after several attempts via email. Hi Harry, just one of many emails you will have received about Thomas, just had to express my disgust at what happened to him and I truly hope there is enough pressure or boycotting to have the Dollhouse pay for this terrible incident. I was there last November with my g/f and was charged somewhat a high price for her drink, I just put it down to, well, it's a good show you can't expect to walk in free but I realize now what they did. Anyway I hope the fundraiser goes well, is there anyway way overseas guys can chip in too? Please keep us up to date with his progress, fingers crossed he has no permanent damage. Harry, The hotel key card thing is urban myth (http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/hotelkey.asp). Ref comparing Angeles to other Asian spots, for the last two years we visited Angeles, Pattaya, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and last year we even hit Ho Chi Minh City ( just backpacking district there). They all had their good points, but if I could only go to one, I would still pick Angeles. It is more inexpensive, with the exception of Phnom Penh, and being able to communicate in English is a big plus. Of course, I lived in Angeles for eight years and still have many friends there and in Manila, so I’m prejudiced. I really look forward to your updates everything month. Keep up the good work and as always if you ever find your way down to San Antonio, please let me know and I’ll buy the refreshments of your choice. Mike Baland. Harry, The picture of the girl in the Brazilian style swimsuit is from the Atlantis Club. (Great, that clears up one question from last month). the America Hotel might be a nice place, but most of the girls i've met here over the past 2 years believe that there is a ghost in the hotel of a girl who was murdered there. That makes the hotel the last one that the girls want to go to. in fact, i've met some girls who told me that they would not spend an overnight there. (This is true. The ladies here are superstitious and I have heard many ladies talk about the America Hotel ghost. Of course there is no such thing but you can't convince some of the ladies of that) Ref. Dollhouse group bars: Crystal Palace and Tropix. Last year, due to poor judgment on my part, i visited these bars about an hour before they closed, both times very drunk. in CP i bought a drink for a lady. i passed out and she went to sleep next to me. when it was time for the club to close the waitress woke me and the girl up so that i could pay my bill, nothing was missing and everyone was very polite to me. in Tropix, i was there late and on the verge of passing out, so gave the waitress money for my bill. while she was getting my change, i fell asleep. when the club was closing, the waitress woke me up and told me to go home. my change was there in front of me. i gave her a nice tip and left. she could have told me i had already paid and i would not have known the difference, i was that far gone, but she was honest. i go to CP regularly with my steady gf. i have never been overcharged for a drink. in fact their customer drinks are decently priced, especially when compared to the Love & Music and Golden Nile bars. i dont go to DH except as a short cut to CP, but in CP and Tropix i have never had a bad experience. Finally, i asked my gf if she had seen any sign in the ladies CR telling visiting girls to ask for LDs. she says she's never seen any. Wolfgang. (Most of the negative reports about the Doll House Group refer to incidents originating at the Doll House itself. No doubt one could go in there every night and never have a problem, but then an incident occurs, many of which are not made public. It is great that even after being careless enough to allow yourself to fall asleep in a Club you were not victimized. Consider yourself lucky. Not all staff are bad and it is nice to get the good reports as well as the negative ones. I am more than happy to report the good ones and it still saddens me to report the negative incidents. Maybe that is Angeles City, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly but I truly believe the Good outshines the darkness brought about by the other two)

Hi Harry, HAPPY 2010! Sitting here at work on a warm Southern California Tuesday and my day was made...Just remembered the January "newsletter" would be up and running! I'll be arriving Fri Jan 22nd for a couple of weeks and I will NOT miss you and your stable this time around. I've got some hot sauces for you and Victoria Secret for your wife... No, not panties, I save those for the "single" ladies. Another outstanding newsletter and it still amazes me when I see complaints. If I don't feel like reading about politics... Absolute power corrupts absolutely! My practice is simple at every bar: Every time a drink is served I check the receipt right then, and if there is an issue it is settled right then. Harry, Stopped by 2 years ago sorry I missed missed you. Have read your news for years, like the right wing comments, the truth is never bad. Retired USN in 76 married a Lady from Angeles in 77. Have been spending 4 months every winter in Angeles, cant stand the cold winters in Kingman Az. I don't bar hop any more at night. I get to Nellis every 3 months to see the doctors and to shop Sea food city. Will try to stop by your stable this year. Oliver.

Harry, Thought your readers might like a short write-up of my recent motorbike trip (with wife Lisa on the back) around Northern Luzon, covering 850 miles in five days. First stop was San Fernando, La Union where I stayed at Sunset Resort which is on the far side of the airport. This is by far the best resort in my opinion and it is run by the affable Spider who is a retired HK schoolteacher and who, by the way, taught both my kids in school there. From there it was up to Vigan where I stayed at the Cordillera Inn, an old Spanish style building right on the ‘tourist street’. The room had a four-poster bed. Vigan certainly lived up to its reputation as being a pleasant and unique tourist destination. Unlike Angeles, I saw no beggars there and indeed nowhere else on the trip were we troubled in any way. From Vigan it was up to Loaog where we stayed at the Five Star hotel, Fort Illocandia which was supposedly built by Marcos for his daughter’s wedding. At around 100 USD walk-in rate it’s expensive but well worth it. I am sure booking through an agent could get a better deal. From there we took a long ride to Tagigarao (spelling?) which is a large town but basically a dump – just a stopping point. The ride around the North coast was very pleasant with excellent roads and great scenery. Next day we rode up to the rice terraces at Banaue which, again, lived up to the tourist hype. The big hotel there is run by the Philippines Tourist Authority but is surprisingly good, reasonably priced and with great views. From there it was a long single ride back to Angeles. The whole 850 mile route is fully surfaced and mostly in good-to-excellent condition, the exception being the National Highway to the South of Banaue which is heavily broken in many places. For information, the concreting and widening of the road from Banaue to Bontoc is now almost complete which will offer a much improved journey for those taking that route. Photo attached is taken on North coastline. One final plug – can I mention our small dirt bike group that rides bi-weekly. The rides are tough, however, and not suitable for novices. Cherry's ClubHarry, On the 24th. of December 2009 [Xmas Eve] I was the victim of an unprovoked ,cowardly attack by a bar manager who I believe goes by the name of Irish Mike. It happened on Perimeter Road about 20 yards up from a bar called The Silly Hat. I am an expat who has been coming to the Philippines for sixteen years, the last ten living in Angeles City. I turn 79 years old this year. At approx. 9-00 pm I walked into the Silly Hat bar and ordered a San Miguel Light. Upon drinking it I asked for the chit which was for 50 peso but found that my pocket had been picked earlier and apart from a few coins I had no money. I asked the waitress to call the manager known as Irish Mike and when I tried to explain my situation he accused me of just wanting a free drink. He told me that I could not leave the bar unless I left my wallet or watch as deposit. I refused to do this as the beer was only 50 peso and my wallet and watch were my personal possessions. He then said he would call the police to which I agreed. I then told him that I would go to my house and get some money and asked for paper and ball pen to give him my name,address and cell phone no. This done and as there was no argument I left the bar but had only walked about 20 yards up the street when he [Irish Mike] came at me from behind and put a headlock on me screaming "I know you are an old man but i'll bite your f------ ear off" which I think he would have done if the Mamasan had not intervened. She told him she knew me and to let me go as she would pay the 50 peso. I will mention also that i have a bad heart and was in fear of my life.
He let go of me and although badly shaken went home and returned with the money, 50 peso, for him. It was then that the girls in the bar asked me what had happened to my left ear as it was covered in blood. I told them that their manager had bitten it. Before leaving I approached Irish Mike and told him that I thought it was harsh treatment for just 50 peso. I had to seek medical treatment and gave the account to the bar owner who paid my out of pocket expenses. I have no grievance with the bar owner who was most concerned over the attack. I have reported the attack to the police at station 4 and made a signed statement. Ron Gilbert (I am in a quandry here. Ron swears that what is written here is true and he has passed his story on to many folks in town. I stopped by the Silly Hat to ask Irish Mike about this alleged incident and he swears that he did not bite Ron's ear. Mike confirmed that the part about the P50 is true and his request for ID or possessions which I indicated was a bit overboard for such a low amount. Mike explained that it was Christmas Eve, the bar was crowded, everyone had a few drinks and his boss was present as well as his wife, etc. Mike indicated that he was not a violent person and would never do such a thing to anyone. He said that when Ron came back with the P50 he did not have anything wrong with his ear. One of the ladies behind the bar told me the same thing. Somehow, I can't imagine any reason for Ron to make up such a tale but Mike's boss, who did give the money to Ron still has Mike on the payroll and he seemed nice enough to me. So, here you have another AC story that kind of has a bit of humor to it and can add to the folklore of this place. Did Mike really do a "Mike Tyson bite? Ron says yes, Irish Mike says no but whatever the truth is, remember one thing, check your wallet before you go into any bar to make sure you have enough on you to pay your bill. Easy to say right? Well, I remember that on two occasions I went out and forgot my wallet and found myself in the same situation as Ron, fortunately, I was in establishments that knew me and my credit was good. What the hell, pop into the Silly Hat, say hello to Irish Mike and ask him about this story, he loves to talk about it (smile))

After spending the holidays in the P.I. with nice weather, I came back to work in Korea with more than 10 inches of snow. A cold welcome back. Don Wong (Ah Don, that is life. You have to work in that cold and deep snow so that you can keep earning those big bucks so you can have those nice vacations in the PI. As I bask in this nice 80 degree weather I will be thinking of you. I am so happy to be retired but remember, some year you too can be so lucky. See you on your next hard earned vacation)

Wild Orchid ResortGreat column, but really "great food' in Angeles. It's the worst food in Asia. I nearly starved until I found a restaurant that served a fair Thai fried rice. Many people I have spoken to who have been to Angeles agree with me. Of course you Americans, for all your good points, still think McDonalds and KFC is good food. What more is there to say, David Gibbs, Thailand. (Ah come on David, give me a break. I have repeatedly said that I am not a good food critic because of my simple tastes. If you talk about Filipino food then yes, I agree, it does not come close to the food offered in Thailand. But, if you nearly starved here then that was your fault as there are decent restaurants here offering up some pretty damn good food and I am not talking about McDonalds or KFC. If all you were looking for was some fried rice then I would say you overlooked a lot of options. We have three Thai restaurants along with Kokomo's, Swagman, Margarita Station and the Blue Boar Inn that put out a decent enough Thai Fried Rice. But, I would hate to see a good visitor to my favorite town starve to death. The next time you visit, freeze up enough meals from Thailand to sustain you during your visit, come see me and I will put them in my freezer. Then, for a small corkage fee, when you get hungry, I will heat them up for you and you can eat to your hearts content. Of course, you would have to buy your drinks here. Hello Harry, I have been back at work for 2 weeks now. Had to settle back in again. I just want to tell you that my 6th trip there was the same as the first, GREAT! I don't know one Expat who would pay any bar a "ladies drink" price for their girlfriend or wife, if there is any around I don't want to know them! The Dollhouse is for tourist who don't know any better, I haven't been to that that bar for about 3 years and I haven't stepped foot in either Tropic's or Atlantis even once. If it wasn't for the "small" bars like Champagne, Roadhouse, Angel Witch and Insomnia I'd be long gone. Good work Harry, keep em honest! Don W. (will try to Don. Remember though, the majority of the Clubs here are run by folks that care for the customers and they receive the business. Those that have confrontational policies will be exposed over time and should adjust. Regretfully, some think they are so big and powerful that they will continue to take advantage of visitors as long as they think they can get away with it. Once a customer pays for an EWR, even if he continues to drink in that bar she came from, the ladies drink charge should not be applicable. If you bring a lady in from another bar the establishment should not charge you for a ladies drink. If any establishment does charge visiting ladies or those that are on EWR then that is the bar to stay out of. When you order a ladies drink, emphasize at the time of order, "local drink only" and then check you bill carefully.)

Hi Harry, Hello Again....

Angeles Beach ClubWhile I spend my time on an Island in the South of the Philippines doing my own medical mission work, I do read your column every month. Although my specialty is OB/GYN, I find myself doing a lot more each trip. But because my work in the US used to be with 100% women, either as patients or coworkers, I have some insight into the Muslim situation as it pertains to women. Your few paragraphs in the January column prompted me to write.

Don't feel too sorry for the plight of women in Muslim countries! I too once was horrified in what I read or heard about the treatment of women there. That was until I learned more about the cause and effect of the situation. You see, it all revolves around women mistreating women. NOT men mistreating women. Also, you might not be aware that Muslim countries are actually lesbian oriented. It starts with the mothers (women) who teach the cycle to their daughters. It is women as mothers who teach their sons 'how' to treat women. It is women as mothers who treat their daughters like slaves in training. It is women who mistreat their daughter in laws. It is women who permit their husbands to act as they do. Women abusing women. Either directly or indirectly...the trail ALWAYS leads back to ....women. It is women who as mothers and grandmothers hold their daughters down while an older lesbian woman cuts off the clitoris of the young girl. It is women that set the standards that other women live by. From birth to death, the woman is born a victim and is then taught to be the abuser. Remember without the cooperation of WOMEN in suppressing women, there would be no suppression of women.

I personally, as a professional working in OB/GYN, found it fascinating that the 'moral aspect of Muslim society is all smoke and mirrors. An 'outed' lesbian is to be stoned to death or other wise killed to help restore the honor of the family. HOWEVER, as long as a woman pretends... wears a uniform / lab coat....title such as RN or MD, she can then live well in a gender segregated society as a closeted (wink wink) lesbian and live rather well. All with men being kept away. Who, of all people, benefits most from a gender segregated society? The lesbians. I have had as patients Saudi women who have went many years without any GYN healthcare due to the fact that they had a moral objection in being treated by a lesbian doc, so they waited to come to the US for a 'shopping trip'. The fact that I was a male, never seemed to be a barrier to my examining them or carrying out any personal treatments.
It was only after talking to several of these Muslim women as my patients that they educated me on how things work in Muslim countries. I at first thought, as do most Americans that Muslim women only wanted / would permit a woman health care provider to care for them. WRONG! There seems to be a two sided internal war going on. Women who are not lesbians trying to better the plight of the average woman in a Muslim country.... schooling, jobs, health care, social status..... and the lesbian oriented status quo system in which women are the abusers and start the training of young girls into a female dominated society where they are taught to live by certain rules and behind closed doors, find comfort and peace with other women. If you psychologically beat down women starting as girls...and leave ONE door open where it appears there is less abuse...is it not understandable that these young girls go towards that 'door'? And behind that 'door' is one of the better kept secrets. Lesbians hold a lot of power in Muslim countries. Of course not all Muslim women are lesbians....but are born into a system that has set rules that favor lesbians and if you fight those rules.... you lose! So, by making men the fall guy / bad guy ogre... women get what they want from other women. Now, I am not telling you there are wild lesbian orgies! But everyone has some level of need for comfort / nurturing. In a society in which WOMEN set the tone that men use women to make sons and cook / clean sex duties, the woman looking for emotional comfort et al are permitted to do so, under some camouflaged policies. Don't expect any radical changes in women's rights in Muslim countries. The WOMEN won't allow it! And it all starts with the mothers and how they raise their children, both boys and girls, into the adults of tomorrow. It has been this way for thousands of years. Women abusing women is the norm in Muslim countries.... accept it and move on. Change can only come from within and as it appears now, the majority of women DON'T want any change!

Although you might get some hate mail if you publish this, it might wake some people up as to the reasons why things are the way they are in muslim countries. If your readers want to make changes in the world..... then send in some money to your Christmas efforts and see changes that effect a local person's life directly. That is what I do on my medical missions. Sure I do save a few lives of people that may die anyway next month or in the near future. But not on my watch. I spend my time, effort and money on helping to make a difference in a few lives, not in trying to tilt wind mills in women's rights in Muslim countries when it is the women themselves who fight change....Thanks again for your time in writing your column...you are an asset to your readers as well as your local community. Bruce (Bruce, that was a lengthy message but quite interesting. I don't think I will get hate mail on this one but there might be a few folks out there that disagree with you. This is the first time I have read anything depicting a Lesbian connection with Muslim women. There must be a hell of a lot of straight ones though because they make so many kids. I guess they have to in order to keep up with the demand for suicide bombers)

Hi Harry, Just a quick note to say thanks for a great site. I have been coming to Phils and Thailand since 1991, and over the years have wised up to the various cons and scams that go on. The story on the Swede guy was bad news, but nonetheless an indication of the short term view that some bars have of their customers. I have been a regular Champagne customer since 1996 and over the years my mates and I have bought heaps of drinks and paid heaps of Barfines there. But not any more. My lady (from Manila) and I went in for a drink and the Mamasan remembered me from past years. I orderd my beer, and when lady orderd a wine i asked how much. Was told P150, and when i queried amount they straight away said P95 only. Drink came, lady had a sip, then the chit came and it was P150! When i questioned the waitress she said she made a mistake. I complained to Mamasan, and she went to the bar then came back and said the price is P150. So we drank our drinks and left...naturally no tip. On the way out I said to the Mamasan to keep on eye on the Harry the Horse site coz this 55 peso is gonna cost you a lot in lost business. She just laughed it off! This sort of ripoff crap pisses me off, so I went to my old favorite Roadhouse to settle down. I think the beer was about P80 or P90, a wine was P95, the service was brilliant, the music great as usual. Said "Gidday" to Fred and told him about my bad to good experience from earlier, and 10 mins later the waitress brings a free round of drinks for us. Now thats customer service! So we stayed for a few more rounds and left a good tip! Roadhouse - never lets me down. Champagne - youse can get fucked! Peter, Brisbane Australia. (It seems like someone is confused in the Champagne Club. Maybe they do charge P150 for wine but between the actions of the Mamasan and the Waitress there certainly could be justification for a customer to feel he is being ripped off. I suspect the owners of the Champagne Group could care less about your complaint or it appearing in this column. I will try to stop by there one night to see what they will charge me for a glass of wine. I agree with you about the Roadhouse. They have always enjoyed a reputation of good service, fairness in pricing and a policy of making sure the customer comes first.)

Got back from Pattaya two weeks ago, last time was twenty years ago, but first I would like to say how moved I was with your opening column.

You wrote really nice Harry about young Joshua and Jessica and their Grandmother Margaret, triumph out of tragedy indeed, I just know they will do well in life. Margaret is a one in a million type, Margaret I salute you.

Pattaya is strangling in its own popularity, ( A/C note ).Walking Street, (shuffle Street) once a playground for men who drank and butterflied is now swamped with gawking tourists, open air bars all playing different noisy music, even the Sois off beach Road are the same. Beer is good, females are nice, pollution not as bad as A/C, police are very good.

Thailand overall seems to have improved since my last visit, the average person on the street seems to be doing ok and don't like politicians doing the wrong thing. The sidewalks, like A/C are hopeless to walk on. Can you imagine in A/C a six foot wide, clear well lit sidewalk from Macarthur highway all the way to Clarkton, no need for noisy dirty trikes. You could bar hop your way up and down the road no problem, with the Third Eye up and going life would be sweet. I will go to Jomtien round the corner from Pattaya in May to see if it’s any better there. Should be in A/C December, try and have a beer with you if you are not on the farm. There is something special you can look forward to when you are participating in all the sporting events at the Barrio Barretto and that is the chance to check out the best fish in chips in that area. When you get hungry take a break, go see Curly, the owner of the "Underground" and order up that English specialty. A couple of my dart players, John and Tom, could not return to Angeles unless they had their order of fish and chips to go. Starting on Sunday, January 3, we will have a new service at the Lewis Grand Hotel... Starting this Sunday, we' ll host a weekly (every Sunday) get together for the members of the German speaking board chizmiz, where their members have a reserved table at the Restaurant of the Lewis Grand, every Sunday, where they can sit together, meet each other, have a chat, a discussion, newcomers can have their questions answered and old members see each other again. It' s a weekly service for German speaking tourists and expats alike. (I do not know if they have a specific time for this or is it an all day gossip session - contact James at the Lewis Grand for specifics)

Chet Marriot, a long time friend to many of us here in Angeles City passed away on 13 Jan 2010 at the Garcia Hospital from a heart attack. Chet has been a mainstay in Angeles City for many years years and was liked by one and all. He was a big, slow talking, slow moving guy who was likable as all hell. He loved playing pool and I think the Powder Keg was the last team he played with. He had two knee replacements at the old PIH Hospital and was happy with the results. When I saw him walk though, it did not appear to speed him up any. He was an old friend of many! Chet was a member of the VFW 2485, DAV 3, VVA P. I. 887 and American Legion. 123. There was a financial problem to pay the hospital for the death certificate, cremation and final burial. Donations were collected by Cliff Wilsey at the VFW, Ralph at the DAV office and other friends around town. Many joined together to take care of a fellow veteran’s widow who was in need of help. Once again our Expat Veterans came together as well as other friends and dipped into their pockets to help a fellow comrade and his widow. This is another reason why it is so great to live here. One is never without friends and so Chet, rest in peace knowing that you are remembered and many helping hands gathered to take you to your final resting place where, finally, those damn old knees of yours will no longer bother you. Have fun jogging around Heaven.

OK folks, I have to admit I am not all that smart and don't understand a whole lot. When it comes to the US Health Bill that our politicians are trying to shove down our throats I admit ignorance. I am deathly afraid of what it might represent and what it might take away. I look for understanding and want to feel more secure in its objectives but I damn sure have not gotten there yet. Now, this guy Michael Connelly from Carrollton, Texas has not made me feel any better. He appears to be a hell of a lot smarter than me so I will let you read his words and you can form your own opinions. Me, I am still terrified!

Well, I have done it! I have read the entire text of proposed House Bill 3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009. I studied it with particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional law. I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were being discussed might be unconstitutional. What I found was far worse than what I had heard or expected.

To begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the media are saying. The law does provide for rationing of health care, particularly where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are involved, free health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion services, and probably forced participation in abortions by members of the medical profession.

The Bill will also eventually force private insurance companies out of business and put everyone into a government run system. All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by federal bureaucrats and most of them will not be health care professionals. Hospital
admissions, payments to physicians, and allocations of necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled.

However, as scary as all of that is, it just scratches the surface.. In fact, I have concluded that this legislation really has no intention of providing affordable health care choices. Instead it is a convenient cover for the most massive transfer of power to the Executive Branch of government that
has ever occurred, or even been contemplated. If this law or a similar one is adopted, major portions of the Constitution of the United States will effectively be voided.

The first thing to go will be the masterfully crafted balance of power between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the U.S. Government. The Congress will be transferring to the Obama Administration authority in a number of different areas over the lives of the American people and the businesses they own. The irony is that the Congress doesn't have any authority to legislate in most of those areas to begin with. I defy anyone to read the text of the U.S. Constitution and find any authority granted to the members of Congress to regulate health care.

This legislation also provides for access by the appointees of the Obama administration of all of your personal healthcare information, your personal financial information, and the information of your employer, physician, and hospital. All of this is a direct violation of the specific provisions of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures. You can also forget about the right to privacy. That will have been legislated into oblivion regardless of what the 3rd and 4th Amendments may provide.

If you decide not to have healthcare insurance or if you have private insurance that is not deemed "acceptable" to the "Health Choices Administrator" appointed by Obama there will be a tax imposed on you. It is called a "tax" instead of a fine because of the intent to avoid application of the due process clause of the 5th Amendment. However, that doesn't work because since there is nothing in the law that allows you to contest or appeal the imposition of the tax, it is definitely depriving someone of property without the "due process of law.

So, there are three of those pesky amendments that the far left hate so much out the original ten in the Bill of Rights that are effectively nullified by this law. It doesn't stop there though. The 9th Amendment that provides: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people;" The 10th Amendment states: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are preserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Under the provisions of this piece of Congressional handiwork neither the people nor the states are going to have any rights or powers at all in many areas that once were theirs to control.

I could write many more pages about this legislation, but I think you get the idea. This is not about health care; it is about seizing power and limiting rights. Article 6 of the Constitution requires the members of both houses of Congress to "be bound by oath or affirmation" to support the Constitution. If I was a member of Congress I would not be able to vote for this legislation or anything like it without feeling I was violating that sacred oath or affirmation. If I voted for it anyway I would hope the American people would hold me accountable. For those who might doubt the nature of this threat I suggest they consult the source. I have to mention an act of kindness extended by Aussie Glenn, one of the new owners of the Koala Lodge in La Union, which features the "Mistys Bar". While Glenn was spending some time in Angeles City he saw Ivar Helseth (Norwegian) in front of the Lollipop bar. He noticed that Mommie Lucy was giving him some money and his curiosity got the better of him so he started a conversation with Ivar. To his surprise and amazement he found out that Ivar had been living underneath the Hensonville bridge with the squatters for quite some time. He had no money and depended on handouts of food and money from various Mamasans in town who would help him and from what little assistance he could get from others. Ivar related that ten years ago he was stabbed and robbed in the Josephville area and that he was helped by a Mamasan from Woody's Pub (no longer in existence) and that he slept on concrete floors and wherever he could. Somehow this guy has survived over the years, how, I don't know. Naturally, living this way was not conducive to putting together enough money to return to his home country. Somehow, fate brought him and Glenn together. Glenn has taken Ivar under his wing and has given him a job at the Koala Lodge which will be opening the first week of this month. Ivar will have a salary, free lodging and food and should be able to regain his self esteem. The agreement is that he will work hard, save his money and get back to Norway to work and get his act together so that he can obtain a pension that would allow him to return here, if he so desires, with a monthly income. I hope that Ivar will take full advantage of the kindness extended to him by Glenn and that he will be able to put his life back in order.

You have to love Oklahoma. To find out why search Google for some of the State laws they have passed recently, i.e., HB 1330, HB 1804, SB 1102, and HJR 1003. The Federal Government, ACLU, and Pelosi are not happy. The good old boys of Oklahoma have it right, too bad not to many other States have the balls to follow suit.

SUBIC FREE PORT -- The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) will open the Floridablanca interchange of the Subic-Clark- Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) today. At 94 kilometers, the Subic-Clark- Tarlac Expressway is the country’s longest tollway. The state agency said this will be the eleventh interchange of the tollway, making it more accessible to motorists in Central Luzon. In a statement, Robert C. Gervacio, BCDA program manager for operational support services and SCTEx spokesman, said the opening of the interchange would provide Floridablanca, the second-largest rice-producing town of Pampanga that is also noted for its sugar farms, with a more efficient way of transporting produce through the new interchange.

Motorists, meanwhile, will now have the option of passing through the traffic-free SCTEx instead of the old Porac-Floridablanca -Dinalupihan local road.

“Even residents of Angeles and Mabalacat should find the new interchange highly convenient,” Mr. Gervacio said. (bit by bit the SCTEx is reaching its final completion. The opening of the SCTEx has definitely made driving to Subic and Tarlac a wonderful experience and has shortened the time it takes to get to Baguio and Zambales as well. Now, my one hope is that they will add a U-Turn to the interchange located before Mabalacat town that will allow motorists traveling from the nearer Northern towns such as Capas and Bamban to enter Clark Freeport without having to go through Mabalacat town to do so. This would ease a very congested bottleneck in that area.)

Remember, last month I predicted that Airport Check-in Security Procedures would get out of hand. Well, it has started already. It looks like this flight was fully booked and note that it appears that for sure, this picture was not taken at the Manila Airport. What's left? I can only guess bending over, assuming the position and in-dept cavity searches being conducted. (ok already, this is a joke. But, I wonder how far away we are from it becoming a reality?)

Finding my "Stable" - Recently a visitor from Melbourne, Australia, Dale Byrne, stopped by to visit me. This was the first time he tried to find my place but has been reading my column regularly. Dale indicated that he had a hard time finding it because he thought he was looking for a real horse stable. Finally, he called back to his mate in Sydney and received detailed instructions how to find my "stable". I enjoyed a good laugh with him over that. Folks, my "stable" is actually the Hotel La Casa/Blue Boar Inn, located on Don Juico Ave (Perimeter Road), near the VFW. It is just pass the Savannah Hotel. Once you see a bar named the Velvet Club, you will see the signs for my Hotel at the entrance to the alley-way next to the bicycle shop. It was a pleasure talking to Dale who has been coming to AC since around 1988. He informed me that his father was the owner of the old Buccaneer Club and that he was was killed in his house. He was stabbed to death and his wife was stabbed 19 times and survived. I was here at that time but do not remember the incident. It was not robbery, Dale indicated that many thought it was a set-up at the time. Angeles City definitely has some interesting history but I look forward to when Dale brings his 19 year old son with him on his next visit. For sure I will take a picture of the two of them.

An English lad has bought up one half interest in the "Silly Hat" Club and is getting ready to start a fairly in-depth make-over for the place. He will start with some refinements in the bar to brighten it up a bit and to add some additional seating and tables. The major expenses will be in building around five rooms on the second floor to accommodate renters and some will feature a Jacuzzi bath. I do not have all the details yet but will be doing an in-depth write-up for the March column.

FINALLY, a map is being distributed that is a bloody big help to getting around Fields Ave. What is good about this map is that even establishments that do not advertise in it are still posted. The creator of this map, Drew (Papsy) is selling ads to cover printing and, of course, make a bit of a profit but his objective is to make the map as comprehensive as possible and easy to follow. His next project will be a map of the Perimeter Road Clubs (Don Juico) Ave from the Checkpoint up to Friendship. This is a great project between Papsy and his Mrs, Irene. This is good as then no one can steal it from him as what happened to Charlie Kemplin and his UTP maps business. Presently the walking maps are being distributed at Hotels, Airports, Fly the Bus, Southern Cross Shuttle as well as in Manila and Subic. Three and a half thousand were distributed in one week. The Peanut Club has been sold to two Americans. I have not met them yet. The present popular manager, Malcolm will be staying on board. The story is that the Yanks hung around the bar for a couple of weeks and then indicated that they wanted to buy the place. The owner was not keen on doing so but an offer was made that he could not refuse so jumped at the golden opportunity to make a decent profit.

Now, this one should come as no surprise. I have heard that Harrow's Club, "Badda Bing" has been sold but as of the time I am writing this Harrow has confirmed but said no money has changed hands yet. The new owner is supposed to be from the Lollipop. That's all we need now, having Fields Ave Club owners coming up Perimeter Road so they can raise prices. So, stay tuned for more news on this one.

Finally, last month I had the chance to stop by the "International" (Shano's) and had a feed that was absolutely glorious. I went for the Black Angus Steak dinner at P995 and it was absolutely fantastic. I love my steaks medium rare and it is not easy to get it exactly the way I like it but by golly, this one was a pleasure to eat. It was a good size and I even saved a bit for Priscilla. Yes, it is true, I went by myself because it was on a spur of the moment. Of course I would gladly take her with me and don't even think that the price had anything to do with it. Well, maybe a little bit, eh, maybe a lot, but hell, I will make up for it on Valentine's day. The point I am trying to make is that eating at the International remains a fun place to eat as the music is not loud and it is great to be able to watch the sports on the big screens around the place as you eat. I am guilty though, of forgetting to check out the Angus Steak House at the Royal Amsterdam Hotel, also managed by Rob. I was reminded by Rob's assistant who happened to be at the International when I stopped in. I will make sure I check out the Steak House this month.

I must congratulate the members of my Friday afternoon pool team led by team captain, Larry. It was a hard fought battle but the Blue Boar Inn beat Emotions 8 to 7 to move out of last place and finish the season next to last. Nothing like ending the season on a winning note. I would hold a season ending party but I do not want that win to go to their heads. Watch out for us next season, onward and upward!

The last picture of VASCO's! Well folks, put this picture in your memory book. It took less than a year but sadly, last month we had to bid goodbye to the Vasco's at the SM Clark. Initially, it sounded like a good idea. Brian thought that he could provide a bit of decent food and a place for husbands to sit, drink, eat and chat while the wife's or girlfriends were shopping. As it turned out too many people were sitting at the tables or counters and drinking one cup of coffee while they chatted for an hour or so. Then, on top of that some would even go to the food counter in the middle of the walkway, order something to eat and then bring it back to eat at the table with their coffee. Bottom line, a fair idea but not workable so he had to pull the plug. Regretfully, four nice ladies, Katrina, Sherry, Weng and Shirley had to start looking for a job the day after I took this picture. Not to worry, I saw Brian at his place in Subic and it is still fantastic and he has a few other projects on the drawing board. One involves father and son getting back to what he knows best, diving wrecks. Vasco's Subic, it is fantastic, I love it there. Brian himself, a man to be respected and admired. He is a legend and the closing of his eatery at SM is a small blip on the failure chart and he was smart enough to know when to pull the plug. The Lewis Grand now offers a double stretch luxury limousine available for bookings, airport transfers, weddings, outings, barhops, etc, just to name a few. It' s a white Lincoln Town car, that was built in the States and converted in Germany, so it' s a European import. Ride in style ! The only Limo available here in Pampanga! (I've seen this limousine and it is impressive. Reminds me of being in Las Vegas. It has only been available for one month and it has quickly become a sought after ride for special events)

I am pleased to report that Sherwin, the owner of Asti Restaurant in Hensonville (one of my favorites) is branching out to open an eatery in the newly opened "Courtyard" located on MacArthur Ave next to Johnny's Supermarket. The name of the restaurant is the "Eatalia" and Sherwin will be on hand to perform his outstanding chef duties. I visited the Courtyard which is still a work in progress and it is an impressive undertaking. Pictures and my impressions will follow further on in this column. One thing is for sure, Sherwin, have my table ready, the Mrs and I will be visiting you quite often to enjoy your great food in an exciting environment.

DOLL HOUSE INCIDENT UPDATE

Pictured here is Thomas Bergelin (Doll House victim) on the right in the company of his good friend, Salvorgen, owner of the Niagara. I am pleased to report that Thomas is up and about but he is not near the good health he had prior to the incident. He has lost considerable weight, still has memory loss and requires medical care at the Henson Ear Clinic. It is difficult for him to talk fluently but he has taken steps to submit an amended complaint to the Fiscal's office at City Hall against the alleged assailants, Rodolfo G. Opiana, Alan L. Oporico and Rosalinda R. Palmero (AKA Mommie Rose) for frustrated murder. This should mean that the two men who were originally charged with simple assault should be recharged and the bails increased substantially. Mommie Rose was not named in the original complaint. I received many Emails regarding this issue and also many comments from those who visited me. The wheels of justice turn slowly in the Philippines but I hope justice will be served. Usually it takes money and time to succeed in such an endeavor but I will continue to provide updates as I hear about them.

ANGELES SPORTS AND COUNTRY CLUB (ASCC)

It might be a New Year but some things will never change. That is increased prices due to our economy and like death and taxes you just can’t get away from it. So it is that I received an Email from Mark Lord, the GM at the Angeles Sports and Country Club (ASCC) announcing an increase in monthly dues at this very fine Club. But one does not mind extra money out of pocket if you get a fair shake for your Peso and the you definitely get that at the ASCC. Last month I attended a wine tasting function there and was pleasantly surprised to see the many improvements made and planned for the future. I think it will be an exciting year for the members of this Club as they see more renovations, additions and special events. Now that you got all that news let me throw in a few pictures from the wine tasting event they had in Dec. That is when I saw the great improvement they have made in recreation and dining area in the Sports Bar location. The event was a team effort between the Sports Club and Yats Wine Club. The event was a successful enough for a first try and hopefully it will be repeated as well as adding other events. I am not a wine drinker so had to rely on opinions of those who were in attendance. The Port and Riesling selections got high marks but in general folks felt that the "reds" were not up to the Yats standard. So, next time, Yats, try to do a bit better with the Red Wine selections. Remember, not my opinion but it is meant as constructive criticism, that is why you have a wine tasting event anyway.

 

NEW YEARS EVE


It is New Years Eve day, in the afternoon, and folks are out unwinding from the Christmas day hassles and enjoying a few drinks at their favorite watering holes on the last day of the Year. As many go barhopping on this day they find that many of the ladies they are used to seeing have skipped out of town to spend their time with families in the Provinces. Many will have a few early drinks with plans to greet the New Year at home, away from the fireworks and crazy drivers on the road. On this afternoon, I stopped by my favorite Clubs to greet folks that were hoisting a few at the Hang Out, Honey Ko's and Thi-Hi. After that I went home to prepare for our family New Year's Eve dinner, play some cards and join together with family and friends to greet the New Year. I think, with increasing old age, I have lost some of my enthusiasm for wild New Year parties and just enjoy the company of family. Also, I have given up spending a lot of pesos on fireworks that go up in smoke so quickly and I wonder why I wasted my money. Instead, it is easier to just go to the gate, look up in the sky, and watch the displays put up by the folks that still like to spend money to light up the sky. Naturally I took a few pictures of some of the lads and gals that made my last afternoon of the year a pleasant one and I enjoy the company and the happiness that we all made it to the end of another year. I have to mention that the owners of the Hang-Out are in the processing of renovating the interior of the bar and it appears that one and all will be able to enjoy a nice comfortable air-conditioned bar when the hot season rolls around. Doug is busy running around supervising all the work. Additionally, I learned that the yard in back is being fixed up where customers can sit there and enjoy a good bar-b-q. After all these years the yard will finally be dressed up to afford a decent place to sit away the hours with a cold beer or two.

THE GRANDVIEW TOWER UPDATE

People might be wondering what is happening with this ambitious project of the Philippine Land Group, Inc., that is becoming an eye sore rather rather then a beautifully completed condo unit. Due to a decision by the court it appears that construction might be on hold for quite some time to go. You see, the folks in charge of the construction ended up being in violation of Building Code 670 which reads: No windows, apertures, balconies, or tother similar projections which afford a direct view upon or towards an adjoining land or tenement can be made, without leaving a distance of two (2.m) meters between the wall in which they are made and such contiguous property.

The owner of the Swiss Apartments next door to this project filed a court case against the Philippine Land Group for violations of the cited building code. This became civil case 14218 whereby the court issued a writ of Preliminary Mandatory Injunction against defendant Philippine Land Group which reads as follows: Now, therefore, you are hereby commanded to enjoin the fefendent, its contractors or its agents acting for and in its behalf, from continuing with the construction of the building on the side facing plaintiffs property and you are to direct the said defendant to observe the two meter setback rule by installing a firewall or by closing all openings on the side of the building facing /beside plaintiffs property, in the manner provided by the rules of Court, and that you immediately submit your return/compliance thereto - AC Phil, Sep 14, 2009.

Note that they only have to cease construction on one side of the building. Building a firewall would not be possible because it would encroach on the property of the Swiss Apartments so the only option would be to demolish the balconies and close up the windows on the side in question. Another option of the Land Group would be to take over the lease of the Swiss Apt and enjoy the 25 plus 25 year option. Much of what is happening now could have been avoided if the folks from the Land Group had communicated a bit better with Daniel from the beginning. My question is how could an experienced contractor not pay attention to property lines and the building code? Could it be an arrogance in which they did not expect a foreigner to pursue legal actions? That is normal in the Philippines where locals feel they can get away with anything with a foreigner because they do not hve the time or the money to take legal action when necessary. This time they guessed wrong, Daniel had both the time and the money. He had to deposit a one million peso bond to take this problem to court. Now, at this stage they want to communicate and who knows, maybe something will be worked out. But for now, do not expect any major construction to start up anytime in the near future. Those folks who have purchased units already will just have to be patient and await an equitable solution or see where they stand in regards to getting their money back. They are from Samar, they have no boyfriends, and are available. It appears that these three pussy cats are deserving of some real serious petting and feeding. You have the names folks, now, go fetch!)

On March 1, 2010 the said bridge will also be closed to pedestrians. Vehicles and pedestrians going in and out of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone are advised to take any of the following alternate routes: Rizal Bridge, 14th St. Bridge or the Tipo Expressway.

A conference was held at SBMA boardroom last Tuesday (January) to discuss effects of the bridge closure. Officials of Olongapo City led by Mayor Gordon, Councilors Cortez and Piano, and leaders of business groups led by Bong Pineda for the city and Danny Piano for Subic Freeport were appraised by SBMA on the project. A follow-up meeting is set at Kong's restaurant next week to come up with mutually agreeable solution to the expected traffic buildup due to the said bridge closure. (

Tourists visiting Subic Bay in Pampanga are expected to double in the next three years with Ayala Corp.’s P3-billion mall project. The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is promoting the former site of the US Naval base as a world-class water sports destination and a convention center after the Subic-Clark expressway was completed. "People will have the chance to enjoy the same water sports attraction without traveling as far as Camarines Sur," SBMA Administrator Armand C. Arreza said in an interview. Along with the proposed mall, Ayala will also develop surrounding areas that will include parks, roads and pathways that should encourage the improvement of existing commercial establishments inside the Subic Freeport zone, he said. Subic will offer interesting attractions with the opening of Ocean 9 casino, a golf course and the development of a high-roller casino island resort in the next three years. Existing attractions such as the Camaya Beach Resort, Legenda Suites and amusement parks are also expected to expand. The Ayala mall project is expected to be finished by 2012, Ocean 9 by next year, the $200-million Neo Cove by 2013, the expansion of Camaya by 2012, the high-roller resort and the improvement of the Legenda suites by 2013. Arreza said they would also develop an area devoted to culture and the arts, an attraction that Subic missed to offer a long time ago. “Subic will have a total face-lift in the next three years," Arreza said. TOURISTS OF THE MONTH

For sure in all the years I have been featuring tourists in this column I have met some happy folks but, believe me, I have never met anyone happier than Andy Leavine. He is with his friend Dave Bogart (Standing) who is also happy but not near as much as Andy. Both men are divorced but Dave has been coming here for over 6 years and he discovered, a long time ago, how happy a divorced man can be here in AC so he has mellowed out a bit. Andy is a different story. He was divorced a few years ago and spent two years as a lonely, sad man, in a place called Weekiwachee, Florida, a bit North of Tampa. Dave, his close friend, spent a long time telling him that he had to visit the Philippines. Finally, last year Andy finally decided to check out what Dave and others were telling him. Man, one visit was all it took. Andy took to Angeles City like a duck to water. He is now on his 4th trip, three last year and his fourth one last month. There is not a sad bone in Andy's big old body right now, in fact, he realizes that he wasted those two years getting over his divorce when actually his Ex did him a favor. Both men work for the Verizon Telephone Company but Dave lives in Dunedin, Florida. Andy has his thirty years in with the company and can retire anytime he wants but he is taking his time and making plans on how to spend more time here in Angeles City. I suspect it won't be long before I see a lot more of Andy. Dave has 8 more years to go before retirement and once he does his plans are already made. Both were staying at the Central Park Hotel and enjoy using the swimming pool at the Pacific Breeze Hotel. Andy is extremely proud of his son who is close to becoming a professional football player. A few teams have looked at him already and he has an agent. He told me that his son told him that, if ever he gets rich, he will give his old man a million dollars. I told him to tell his son, that in the meantime, just pay for his airline tickets to the Philippines. Two great guys, lots of fun and I will again pass on the sage advice from the Horse's mouth: "Divorced men - do not be sad because the old lady dumped you, or you did the deed yourself. Do not stay home watching TV or dating grandmother's! Regardless of your age, visit Angeles City, relax, see the sights, enjoy the swimming, warm sun all year long and enjoy the opportunity to meet women who will make you feel alive and extremely happy. Make one trip here and that is it, you will want to return again and again. Don't believe me? Ask Andy!!!!

I WOULD IF I COULD


A special treat this month, I have two ladies from Honey-Ko's that caught my interest. The first picture is that of Cristina Leyte, 23 years old from Leyte. She has 5 sisters and 2 brothers so that is a pretty large family. Cristina does not have any children and at this time no boyfriend so the field is wide open here folks. She is a High School graduate and has worked at the bar for four months only. Her favorite subject in high school was science and her ambition is to graduate from college and become a teacher. I was impressed with her personality and answers to my questions. This is one of those moments when my picture does not really do her justice. She is much more attractive than pictured here. I had a pleasant surprise when I asked her what age group she would like to see in potential suitors. She answered "50 and above". Wow! I asked "how about 72" (my age next month) and she said that was OK. Naturally, I had a big smile on my face by now and I asked her why 50 plus? Her answer: "I want a man more experienced than me". The second lady is "J.C" and she is 25 years old, also from Leyte. She has one child but no boyfriend. Her Email address is: gaylyn_14@yahoo.com. I did not get a full interview with her but I had to take her picture because I saw her dancing a week earlier and I remembered I promised her that I would take her picture. I was lucky to remember because it is rare that I take a drink or two and on my last visit I got a bit tipsy. You see, I stopped into Honey-Ko's to say hello to Damien or Des and ran into Pat Lynch, Bob Campbell and another guy from Puerto Galera and they invited me to sit down for a drink. I did not want to order another coffee so went for a rum and coke, I figured one would not hurt. Well, the company was great, the conversation was fun and it was just a spontaneous meeting. The problem was that one drink turned into two, and then I lost count. In my haze I remember talking to J.C. and promising to take her picture and that I would find her a husband or something like that. Priscilla picked me up and I was judged to be intoxicated but still fairly mobile. I did not get back to JC until five days later and then Des suggested that I should consider Cristina. I did but still I had to keep my promise to JC. Now, what about the guy getting that nice hug in the middle picture. His name is Andy and he wanted to tell his friends out of town, especially Nick Foster to "eat your hearts out". And that folks, is the end of the story.

MORE TOURISTS OF THE MONTH

Yes, I had more than a few interesting visitors last month and I have to give them special mention. I try to acknowledge these visitors and show my appreciation for their readership and also various gifts or mementos they bring to me and the fact that they took the effort to find my "stable" which isn't all that easy to find the first time. The three lads pictured here, John, Dave and Jim are from Derbyshire, England and Dave brought me a very special gift of a limited edition bottle of Dave's Insanity Hot Sauce. It came with a small certificate and a special wooden box. I keep it separate from my two display cases as I am afraid of losing it. John and Jim were staying at the HANA Hotel and Dave at the DM Residente. They all agreed that the Road House and Gecko's were their favorite Clubs in town. John has been coming to AC for 16 years and is starting paperwork for a fiancé visa. Jim has been a visitor to AC for 6 years and Dave 5 years so you can say we have three die hard fans of Angeles City. I had a few lads from England stopping by and when asked what I would like from England I had to say bring me some of that great instant Yorkshire Pudding Mix. I am down to my last packet.

WHERE IS THAT TRAIN?


As you drive around town in various locations you will see the results of demolition work in preparation for the laying of tracks for the new railway system that we have been hearing about for many years now. It has taken years to get this far because of the squatters, both those in need and professionals that are in abundance throughout this country because of the ridiculous Lima Law that caters to squatters. But, whatever, the question is when will the rubble be cleared away and other buildings destroyed to make way for the tracks. The pictures I took here are in Hensonville along the road leading to the Robinson Mall and the Checkpoint. You can also see the rubble on the way to the SM Clark Mall on first Street. I also caught glimpses of it in spots within Angeles City and once in San Fernando when I had to go there. So, bit by bit progress is being made and squatters are being relocated to new living areas. The question is, when will we see railroad tracks crossing the Checkpoint again and then a train stopping at "Checkpoint Station"? I have no idea but I wonder if it will be in my lifetime. The fourth picture below shows the path going to the checkpoint. The sixth picture shows where the tracks will come out, right next to the hair style barber. In any case, it is interesting to watch the slow progress and wonder how it will affect the Checkpoint that we are familiar with today. Traffic is bad enough now, what will it be like if a train goes by a few times a day. Hell, I could get those pictures I never took back in the 70's.

THE COURTYARD

Attention Mr. Delfin Lee, multi-millionaire owner of the Enclave and Xeviera subdivisions and now the Courtyard. You have brought an exciting eating and entertainment venue to Balibago but who was the idiot in your Marketing department that decided to charge P350 per person for a grand opening event so that the band could be paid? My goodness, such a charge is unheard of. If you could not afford the band then forget it. Now, you are charging an exorbitant Courtyard Association fee that includes chipping in for the payment to the band that will play nightly. That might be an attraction that your younger patrons will appreciate but usually, live bands do not control the volume of their music and their music becomes loud and intrusive. Do not get me wrong, I visited the Courtyard and was impressed with what I saw even though many of the stalls were not open for business yet. The people who will be spending their money at this great new venue will not care about the internal problems of the vendors there but I only suggest that your marketing people listen to the concerns of those folks who make up your Courtyard Association and maybe reconsider some of the fees put on them. Just passing on what I have heard. I walked with you during the opening ceremonies of the Enclave and was impressed with you and your business skills. I was not aware of your Courtyard opening and did not attend but I have heard many shocked comments about your P350 charge. It was a negative rather than positive marketing ploy. Never-the-less Delfin, thanks for getting rid of that eyesore, urine filled old theater and replacing it with a beautiful building that all residents of Angeles City can be proud of.

Here are a few photos I took during my walk through of the Courtyard. I was the first to order a take-out pizza from the Sfacciato, a small eatery specializing in pizza and pasta dishes. If you like a paper thin crust pizza then you will love the Sfacciato. I found the pizza to be tasty and my son loved it. Me, I go for a thicker crust but that did not stop me from eating 80% of the pizza before I remembered to save some for my youngster. My impressions of the Courtyard? Absolutely excited and pleased. It appears to be a gigantic dressed up Karaoke establishment with plenty of music and many different food outlets. I did not get to explore the second floor but am sure I will have many opportunities to do so. I was thrilled to see a country and western music venue, "Saddles and Spurs" and was able to meet a very talented interior designer there, Mr. Marvin Clemente, who impressed me with the work he was doing not only in this establishment but throughout the Courtyard and other projects. His cell phone number, in case you should have need of his services, is 0920-820-8834. Rare in the interior design business is that he is straight and narrow, a nice personality and quite talented. Maybe I can get him to redesign my little old stable. Ah, I drift again. As I already mentioned, Asti is represented here in the form of a beautifully designed double stall named the "Eatalia" and you better believe that with Sherwin holding down the kitchen you will definitely want to eat here. Hey, how about a "Hooters"! Yes, it is there and I wish I could be a part of the employee interviewing team. I really want to visit this place when it is open. I have never been to a Hooters in the States as I don't stay there long enough to find one but I will be checking this one out. Looking for another Mexican outlet, the Taquieria offers Mexican food and fills that need. There is such a variety of food offered in this venue, truly international. I scoped out the bandstand and the enormous speakers spread about and I am apprehensive about the ability to keep the band sound down to a reasonable level. Most of the places have outside tables and chairs to eat and drink and it would be a shame if one's conversation is drowned out by an overzealous band. Will have to check it out one night. All in all, my opinion - the Courtyard will be a huge success and will become a tourist attraction.

 

THE ANNUAL RSL AUSTRALIAN DAY BEAUTY CONTEST RESULTS

This was one of two beauty contests that I attended last month. The RSL Miss Australia Day event was held at the Rib Eye banquet hall and there was a finals beauty contest held at the H-Rock Club. Both events presented some darn good looking ladies. At the RSL event I was there simply to take pictures but at the H-Rock I was honored to be a judge. In the past few years the RSL event was held at the Wild Orchid but this year organizers decided to go for a larger, more contained venue at the Rib-Eye and I must say that it was a good decision. It was comfortably air-conditioned, everyone had a good view, the food was good and at least 250 paying customers were able to enjoy an excellent meal as well as gazing at 21 very good looking women. Naturally I will present some pictures of both events so you can see why the Philippines is known for its beautiful women. Let me start off with the RSL event.

 

Now that gives you a pretty good idea of the quality of the ladies that were presented that night. Peter did a great job as usual and he sent me the names of the bars these ladies worked at but, yes, once again, I lost the paper I wrote the names on. But, Roxanne Esplana is from the Atlantis and Renalene is with the Tropix Club. I found those names. Ah, wait, just called Peter, Justine works at the Honky-Tonk club, April works at the fiesta Garden and Stephanie, Miss Australia Philippines was sponsored by the Ponderosa Hotel. Thank goodness for cell phones and Peter's memory. By the way, Peter indicated that he was very happy with the venue said that the Rib-Eye folks underestimated the amount of wine the folks can consume. They ran out by 8 PM and had to go out and buy some more. Folks did comment that the band, as usual, in any event, was too loud. That is why I do not like live bands anymore, they do not do proper sound checks to assure that their music is tolerable for the average ear in the audience. Now that I have provided the ladies pictures, let me add a few of those supporters in attendance.

PERIMETER BAR (ILLUSSIONS)


In the past I have written about two Clubs on Perimeter Road that are great places for expats to sit, relax, have a few drinks and enjoy conversations dealing with a million and one subjects. Of course I am talking about the Hang-Out and Garfields that are considered neighborhood watering holes where old friends meet and new ones are made. No one is hustled, no loud music, and to many, it is a home away from home or a place to get away from the Mrs or girlfriend for a few hours. For some reason I have, over the years, overlooked the Perimeter Road bar where Wolf (Illusions) runs an equally acceptable bar with a steady clientele. They have what I call, the conversation table where the regulars sit around and Barry is the long time moderator for round table discussions. They have a pool table in the rear which is far enough removed not to interfere with the folks at the table. They do have a few dancers on board but Wolf keeps the music at an acceptable level so that each conversant can be heard at the table. I have been in this bar quite a few times but forget to mention it. I would go in more often but Wolf keeps tossing B52s my way and I return the favor but at times regret that he discovered the one and only drink that I truly enjoy. Wolf and Barry have been around this town a hell of a long time and they make a good team. I don't know if I am all that welcome at "the table" but by golly, I do intend to drop in a bit more often. I like the fact that some of the folks there are around my age and that counts for something. If you get a chance, stop in and say hello to Barry and Wolf, you will enjoy the visit.

Priscilla is heading to Manila on the 3rd to have an interview at the American Embassy for her visa renewal. She is gathering up all the paperwork she can to show that she has no desire to stay in the States and will be returning. It should be easy to prove, she is too old to get a job there, I have been here for years with no intention of leaving, life is too comfortable here and one thing is for sure, she will not let me stay here by myself. I will be hitting 72 years of age on the 25th of this month and am damn grateful to have made it this far. There won't be a big blow-out, will save that for if I make it to 75 but will have a family gathering and maybe shout a few rounds in the bar on the 25th for whatever customers are on hand. Someone brought me a unique set of hot sauce that he purchased in Qatar and I will put in his picture in March. Had a visitor that is a look-a-like George from the Seinfield TV show. Look for him in March. I will get out and beat the bushes a bit more this month. I did visit the "One Eyed Wench" Bar on Fields Ave, located right next to Treasure Island and it was a decent place to pop in and have a drink or a game of pool. I enjoyed meeting Mommie Myrna and will add a bit more information in March. Maricel, I did not forget you either. Look for your picture in March. I have to sign off now as my computer guru is due any time now and I still have to insert the ads, plus I am getting hungry. Folks, thanks for all your support, comments, negative and positive and thanks to all those who visited me.
